Jawbones are very accurate, up to a point (3.5). But after that there can be some variance in wear
Most biologists that look at hundreds every year get pretty good at it.

Wait..hold up. If you shoot a trophy mount you gotta pull the jawbone and frick up your mount?

We ask that they get the taxidermist to pull the jawbone after they skin the skull then send it in
We have one lease that had an issue with members switching jawbones with a taxidermist, so they do require members to pull the jawbone before leaving the lease. But that's an extreme case

I am a biologist and have aged on average 50 deer per year for 24 years. The best method requires killing the deer and pulling incisors, cross sectioning and aging like tree rings. Second best is looking at the lower jaw, which I think I can be within 1 year at over 90% of the time with my experience and the feedback I have received after the incisors, double checked my estimations. But I am not comfortable aging by looking at antlers because genetics and climate factors are too big of factors to just throw into the equation when trying to decide if a buck is a cull. We don't do that because we know a hunter cannot be held accountable for that.

Club rules say anything that is 5 and 1/2 years old and less than 8 points is a cull.

If I shoot him and he isn't 5 and 1/2 I am done for the year so I am probably going to let him walk
Wow! I don't know that I could enjoy deer hunting under such tight restrictions. On our family owned land, it's been quite a while since I've seen a buck that old (we pull lower jaw bones on all the deer).

Palmyra rules say anything 3.5 and less than 8 points is a cull. Not sure i agree totally, but they have biologist advising them too.

Just because a buck is a 7 point one year, doesnt mean he wont be a heavy 11 next year. With that being said, i would pass on this deer. In a club like that, shooting a 7 will likely get a few members riled up. If he doesnt have the pot belly and he isnt walking slow, kinda stove up like, he probably isnt a 6 year old deer.
