The nation's biggest high-end grocery chain and the hottest Greek yogurt brand are parting ways.

Whole Foods Market Inc. WFM -1.38% will stop selling Chobani yogurt by early 2014 to make room for more organic and GMO-free brands, according to people familiar with the matter.

Whole Foods has said it wants to remove by 2018 all food containing genetically-modified organisms, or GMOs, among their ingredients without disclosing the fact on labels.

Chobani markets its Greek yogurt as containing only natural ingredients, but it has received complaints from consumer advocacy groups for its use of milk that comes from dairy cows fed with GMO animal feed.

Whole Foods plans to fill the shelf space vacated by Chobani with more niche, organic and GMO-free yogurts, said a person familiar with Whole Foods' strategy. The person said the yogurt section has grown increasingly crowded, so Whole Foods wants to trade out brands that are widely sold in other stores for more exclusive ones.

The GMO debate is so overblown/ill-informed.

The gene added to GMO sweet corn comes from bacteria that is used by ORGANIC farms to prevent caterpillars from eating the corn.
The gene added to GMO grains is a gene from a petunia (natural flower) that shows round up resistance.
Even though natural occurring proteins are being added, they are deemed the devil because of a well thoughout media campaign.

whole foods is worse than GMOs

I hear you but it is still genetically modified. It may be a naturally occurring gene in other things but when added to other species, it causes problems.

Where and how? The data doesn't back that up.

So, are farmers allowed to use anything to protect their crops? Or should they just accept that they are going to lose 40-60%?

If you did not have GMO's you would have many more famines across the globe. And like it or not America and American agriculture feeds the world. Whole Foods said it...get rid of what you can get everywhere else and get niche products. GMO my arse. MONEY is more like it.

I agree.

I am positive they have good programs and a degree of healt, animal welfare and environmental consciousness that traditional supermarket chains might not have.

But they are now a huge company. They advertise themselves as the world's largest retailer of natural and organic foods.

World's largest means lots of money. We already know natural and organic are nearly meaningless words.

They realize that people can get Chobani at Kroger for a lot less money, so they drop it.

This is true. I've talked to farmers who are "natural" and when they have problems with their crop the natural company who buys their crop tells them to save the crop with whatever means necessary. It is a total sham and marketing scheme.
