I shoot a .308 I don't think you're a nancy, you probably had a bad rest and may have been shooting a heavier load. I've shot .243's that I swore kicked like a .45 Gov. It has a lot to do with the gun and the situation.
The main reason I have the .308 was because of a friend that has a SISK that will drive nails at 250+ yards. I saw him free hand shoot a coyote at 200yds that was at a trot in the head. Now my Savage is about $2k less than his Sisk, but I'm not OT rich either.

I think the .308 is a better round for shots out to 100 yds. I just like the heavier round. I also like the shorter action on the shorter round. The barrel on a .308 is shorter as well. That all equals a lighter more manageable rifle.
These aspects make it a better all around deer rifle.
The .257 is a great round. I have one and love it. I consider it more of a bean field rifle. Meaning it's better suited for longer shots.

Tikka in either .25-06 or 7mm-08 with Zeiss Conquest. Ive got both of these rifles and they are perfect for my hunting

Lots of folks saying 308. I'd imagine if I had to choose one deer rifle forever I think I'd pick a 30-06.

I've been going with the 30-06 since I was a little kid and I've killed tons of deer with it. Literally. But if it was strictly a deer rifle...
No reason not to go .308 and plenty of reasons TO do it. There's really no other caliber with that many bullets made for it or that much ballistic information available for it. It's short action so it's more accurate/lighter. Recoil is less. Velocity is real close. Like I said, there's just no good reason not to go .308 when you're talking deer.
Now the idea of a moose or grizzly bear with it would make me want to buy another gun where the 30-06 I'd have a little more confidence there with heavier bullets, but like I said, velocities are similar enough where it's not that different.

You could play the "why not" or "why so" game all day. I just looked up the ballistics for the 25-06 just cause I haven't in a while and the quarter bore intrigues me. I remembered why I have never given it real thought. Why? Why a 25 over a 270. Why a 270 over a 30? Usually all the "why" discussions boil down to "I started with" or end with "I've killed a lot of deer with". My personal pet round is a 270win. I grew up shooting one and my dad and I will still tote a 270 over all our other rifles most of the time, but the 300 wsm is finding a warm place in my heart lately.

I love the .270 because it's practically the same round. But when it comes down to it, there's more choices for the .308/.311/30-06 in bullet weights.
Not that I ever actually use that. If it's just a deer rifle, there's a lot of rounds that would do pretty much equally well. Any or the .260-.300+ rounds will do an admirable job of turning a deer into table fare almost instantly as long as the velocity is right and the weight is not too high.

I probably like my 300 wsm more because if the rifle then the round. The xbolt is just a well thought out rifle. If it wasn't so damn pretty I would probably hunt with it a lot more. Then again I think a "deer rifle" needs to be blued and riding in a nice chunk of wood to be a classic "deer rifle".

To answer the OP, I would choose a Remington Sendero in 300 RUM. you can hand load ammo to produce velocities similar to 30-06, or to replicate a howitzer.
Glass would be either Swarovski or Zeiss.
On a budget? Browning x-Bolt with Zeiss Conquest on top.

I tend to agree with. I usually don't think of overkill as being on the killing end. I've seen too many people shooting magnums and being so scared of the recoil that they can't hit shite. If you can shoot it accurately and afford the ammo, then go for it.

The 7mm 08 and 260 are as good a pure deer rounds as there are, in my opinion.

I've shot a 300mag for over 15yrs. Recoil has never been a problem to me. I love shooting it.
