the last few years, I'm hard pressed to think of deep ball completions where he just hit the guy in stride streaking past the D...the crazy one to morgan last year was underthrown and adjusted to by the receiver.

He has hit graham in stride plenty, and the first TD pass to meachem this year, though I wouldn't call it a deep ball

I can name about 7 or 8 he hit in 06 and that was a long time ago, 08, 09...07 is a blur; so disappointing

this year, aside from hitting graham in stride 3 times and meachem once (not a deep ball) drew looks innacurate when going over the top and has, to me, since the 2010 season.

So you've looked at a lot of his balls over the years and you saying he isn't hitting the deep ball.

no but if I did a comparison of 06 and 13, you'd see the difference...again, I don't know if he is still hitting on a high percentage or not

just an observation and I could be wrong.

going up top to graham against tampa, miami and atl are the only ones that I can think of this year.

Drew doesn't hit that deep ball in stride like he used to

like the one to stills for a td against dallas, he underthrew it and stills adjusted...I have noticed this since 2010. I'm not sure of the completion percentages but it just doesn't look like it used to

I can think of so many balls in 06, 07, 08, and 09 where he hit it right on the money, but the last few years he seems off

anyone else notice this

You are correct. I think some of it is a result of him throwing to wide open WRs...he seems to intentionally play it safe. Keep in mind, he's completing a high percentage of those throws...just not in stride.

But, for everything he is great at, he's doesn't have great tremendous accuracy downfield. Luckily for us, he's so good at processing information and understanding the game, it doesn't affect his performance much.

I tend to agree with you.

However, in some cases, an under throw works in the receivers favor.

So he's older and losing arm strength? Sounds about right.

I seem to recall a stat from this season showing he has the highest, or at least top 3, in passes over 30 or 40 yards. Seems he has pretty good accuracy downfield to me.

As much as people hate to agree with this, even someone with the worse homer shades can see it. He has under thrown quite a few deep balls this year. A lot more than previous years for sure. It may not show on a stat for completions down field but it's obvious just watching.

Deep Passing (QB)

Using our target location data, we’ve selected passing attempts that traveled 20 yards or more in the air. From that sample we offer a look at typical passing numbers as well as Attempt Percentage (number of deep passes relative to all attempts) and show the QB’s Accuracy Percentage on such throws. Whether you are looking to see who is going deep most often or who has been most successful at it, we’ve got the numbers here.

Example: In 2009, Drew Brees finished with the 10th-most Deep Pass attempts (63; Philip Rivers and Peyton Manning tied with 73 at the top), but his 1206 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 58.7 Accuracy Percentage on deep passes all led the league.

Past Deep Passing leaders (by Deep Accuracy Percentage):
2008: Kurt Warner (ARZ) 58.7% on 46 attempts
2009: Drew Brees (NO) 58.7% on 63 attempts
2010: Vince Young (TEN) 54.3% on 35 attempts
2011: Aaron Rodgers (GB) 60.7% on 61 attempts
2012: Colin Kaepernick (SF) 60.6% on 33 attempts

what i thought but like i said i don't know his current % downfield this year

When he completes them, it tends to be underthrown but I don't know if that is because guys are covering and they adjust...practiced

OR

he is losing strength or accuracy downfield

If I just went off the top of my head from 8 years ago

2006

GB - hit devery perfectly in stride TD

Cincy - hit a perfectly covered joe horn in stride on a flea flicker...best throw he has ever made

PHI - hit joe horn in stride TD

1st ATL game - devery burns deangelo hall and drew hits it on the money...also a fluky hail mary to end the half

I think he hit terrance copper against dallas or jamal jones, on a deep ball in stride that year too

and that is off the top of my head. The last few years I've noticed a huge difference with the ball placement on his deep throws

2011 - hit devery perfectly in stride

His deep ball numbers are still the best in the NFL this year

I think a real issue we are having this year is that lack of a deep threat receiver to stretch the field.

Stills has shown flashes and meachem isn't what he was in 2009

Also it doesnt help that he rarely has time to step up in the pocket to deliver the ball
