I'm sure they are

but they are more and more underthrown...it looks intentional to me. Like he is hitting the deep ball when it is covered because of the timing and trust with his receivers

Stills TD against Dallas being exhibit A

I was at that game. Was gonna mention it. Amazing throw.

I was on the stennis watching the game with some people, we were all floored at what a great throw it was, too bad our D sucked balls in that game.

If you went through the entirety of every pass in NFL history, you won't find a more perfectly thrown deep ball...hit him to the centimeter in stride and the guy was all over joe horn's back

beautiful throw...I'd be grateful if someone could find it on video

I think a real issue we are having this year is that lack of a deep threat receiver to stretch the field.

This....He also doesn't have a wide receiver who can go up & make catches against tight coverage. No one on this receiving corps excels in beating press man coverage. That isn't allowing many shot throws downfield to be thrown much less completed.

I'm not disagreeing at all

I'm curious if it is intentional underthrows with trust the receivers will adjust or trust in the mismatch (meachem opening day against the lions comes to mind)

or if it is an arm strength issue

or all of it

Who knows

graham is the only one who can get behind the defense (he is a fricking te, amazing)

and he hits graham in stride every time.

He really doesn't though. But that may be intentional. He usually throws the ball a bit behind Graham so that he can high point it rather than run under it.

In the Atl game, Graham was wide open on the double move. Brees underthrew him, Graham caught it, and still made it to the end zone.

I tend to think stuff like this is Brees having learned that there is an advantage to not throwing the ball out in front of receivers.

However, I do think you have a valid point the over the top throws. He under throws them consistently.

D's have adjusted to Drew. Meach ain't what he used to be. No more Devery. Colston is nowhere what he used to be. We do miss the blaze JMorgan had.

I agree with the OP.

In the last 3 or so years, his deep balls are thrown a yard or two short.

PFF put up their cumulative receiver stats, one interesting tidbit:

quote:

Kenny Stills has been an anomaly for New Orleans this season. He leads all receivers in yards per target by far at 14.2, but he is also dead last in target rate, seeing a target on just 10% of his routes.

I don't have an account so I can't access the premium content and see more about our receivers.

So Drew is basically 4th then. Under 40 attempts passing downfield is a joke

Yes. Doesn't make him a bum, or ready to sail off into the sunset but it can not be denied.

He's not 23 anymore, he also had a major shoulder repair in his past. He cannot deliver the deep ball as he once could. He seems to really have to wind up to get it deep and this results in underthrows. He may be able to throw it as far as in the past but it takes more time and effort to get it there and the result is receivers outrunning the ball.

You're correct. I've noticed this in the past two years. It's as if he's throwing the ball a half-second too late.

It happens to all of them.

thing is hes not quite the same but hes real close--just slightly less accurate which leads to one or two plays per quarter different--means alot when u have no running game

Someone posted some stats a couple weeks ago, with graphics. It showed Brees as one of the most accurate deep ball passers, if not the tops.

Yes.....and No. While I agree with you that his arm may be losing some strength (He is 34), I tend to agree with an earlier poster about the collapsing pocket.

I can remember a TD pass Drew threw while on the run (can't recall which game), but he threw a frozen rope. I think he still has more than enough arm strength for HIS game.
