Flowood Police say Joseph Edgar Ray had an enhanced carry permit for the weapon that discharged in Pinelake Church Sunday morning, but apparently didn't adhere to some of the safety precautions you should take when carrying a weapon.

Officers took Ray into custody and took possession of a 9mm handgun. The handgun was in Ray's right front pocket and went off as he sat down.

Carried the gun with a round in the chamber with the hammer oocked back before sitting motion forced the hammer forward maybe?

Let's just agree that he was not taking proper precautions and if he didn't kill someone he is lucky.

Or pull a Plaxico and shoot himself in the thigh.

SO this cat has an enhanced carry and he busts up in the church house with it in his pocket. I'm going to assume it was not holstered in any form.

I'd be willing to wager that a large percentage of accidental discharges of CC are a result of pocket carry like this.

If you carry, treat a gun like a gun.

I could never carry without the trigger being covered and I carry an LC9. You have a safety, a ton of trigger pull, and DAO and I still would not be comfortable with the gun just loose in my pocket.

Stupid.

Who feels the need to carry a gun into church??

If I ever start carrying a gun I am going to wear it on my hip so everyone knows I have it.

I darn sure am not going to register for a CCP so the government knows I have it.

I have only felt the need to carry a handgun once or twice. After Katrina I kept one in my truck and wore it on my belt while pumping gas in those long lines. If I have to carry a large cash deposit I will put a gun in the car.

I believe for most people carrying a pistol will get you into more trouble than it gets you out of.

This idiot case in point.

So you think you can choose where you are going to need to defend yourself or your family?

There were 97000 unintentional injuries from firearms from 2007-2012 PLUS 23054 suicides and suicide attempts. (over half involving white people)

There were 323000 injuries arising from violent gun use. Only 55000 of these injuries involved white people. Most of these involved domestic disputes.

SO as a white man I MUCH MUCH more apt to shoot myself than to be shot.

Stats here LINK

I am a gun guy but I ain't crazy. Carrying a gun is proven by statistics to put me at a bigger risk than not.

I probably own 20 guns but I have never felt I needed to carry a gun full time.

What does being white have to do with this? If a purple guy attacks me I'm gonna shoot him. The guy in the OP has some issues. Getting the proper holster should have been one of them. I carried my Sig 238 in my pocket all weekend. My leg is still there. I hope if you are ever in a situation where you're not around your truck you have a CCW holder somewhere close by to save your white a$$
