Is there a perfect duck boat? Width, motor, long tail, short tail?

I'm planning on buying a new duck hunting boat after graduation in May and would like the OB's advice. Here is a DU article on the perfect duck boat. LINK I want a boat versatile enough to hunt timber and the marsh/delta. Advice?

Then no, there is not the perfect duck boat. "Jack of all trades, master of none"

i'm going to have an 18' aluminum boat built (someone i know for $2500 inc trailer) with an extended transom so the back floats higher and i will be able to interchange a tiller handle outboard, long tail, and surface drive (frogs, fishing, and ducks)

Wick, if I focus on the marsh/delta what do you recommend?

I feel like this is the key, but I don't have that kind of money, yet.

it really is the way to go, i'm not going to have everything at once, i'm likely going to find a used outboard and go from there, i would def try to find someone to build a boat for you to your specs, it is cheaper and they can build it the way you want it

Yeah because new grads cant afford to get a duckboat.

To answer the question, to hunt all terain, you will need something with a surface drive. You will need it to be narrow enough to navigate trees, but wide enough for stability. There is also a good thread on here on how to build your own blind.

Since everyone seems concerned with my finances.. I'm planning on selling the two boats I already own and consolidating to one boat that will work for most situations.

I dont think anyone is wondering about your finances. I think jimbeam doesnt understand, you can finance a duck boat and come out with a couple hundred buck month a note if you wanted to.

And ifyou are single, you had better go ahead and get said boat now.

Exactly! I am single. So, I want to go ahead and do it while I can.

so you think extending the transom will make it float higher?

I'm curious: what are the primary pros/cons of a longtail over a mud motor?

I'm sure he understands that, but why would you want to take on another note right out of college? this is assuming he will have to pay for a car, living, etc.
