PS4's GPU may hold more power than originally believed

The already significantly more powerful PS4 GPU may be even more powerful in the future.
quote:
The PS4's GPU, entitled "Pitcairn," is clocked in at 1.84 teraflops of processing per second, thanks to the former count of 1152 stream processors, which allow devices to better manage and delegate information for faster loading. However, after a closer look by MyDrivers.com, the PS4 has more.
Pitcairn, or the AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series, according to the images provided, houses 20 graphic cores, and each core has 64 stream processors, which totals to be 1280, leaving 128 of these stream processors unaccounted for. Now, as the report on the WCCF Tech website indicates, these extra processors could simply be dead.
However, the chance that these extra processors are merely dormant is worth consideration, which means that the PS4 could have more graphical power in the future than it does now. Sony has done things like this in the past: the PS3 didn't use all the processor cores that the Cell Processor had.

You're telling me consoles get more powerful and polished over time? This has never happened ever in the history of gaming. Sony is revolutionizing the industry.

Lot of lower end graphics cards are the same silicon as higher end cards with cores and features turned off or disabled.
This is nothing new.
Doubt those would get turned on later because that would greatly affect the thermals on the console.

I hope they push her to her limits and your devil box catches fire.

There is a really good chance that the XBone is designed the same way.

shhh.. this is a logic free zone.

But it's significantly smaller/weaker so it wouldn't really matter.

Why is that funny? You do realize the One's GPU is significantly weaker than the PS4's right? Been confirmed for quite awhile in teardowns.
quote:
Again, by virtue of being an AMD APU, the Xbox One and PS4 GPUs are technologically very similar — with the simple difference that the PS4 GPU is larger. In PC terms, the Xbox One has a GPU that’s similar to the (entry-level) Bonaire GPU in the Radeon HD 7790, while the PS4 is outfitted with the (mid-range) Pitcairn that can be found in the HD 7870. In numerical terms, the Xbox One GPU has 12 compute units (768 shader processors), while the PS4 has 18 CUs (1152 shaders). The Xbox One is slightly ahead on GPU clock speed (853MHz vs. 800MHz for the PS4).
In short, the PS4's GPU is — on paper — 50% more powerful than the Xbox One. The Xbox One’s slightly higher GPU clock speed might ameliorate some of the difference, but really, the PS4's 50% higher CU count is a serious advantage for the Sony camp. Furthermore, Microsoft says that 10% of the Xbox One’s GPU is reserved for Kinect. Games on the PS4 will have a lot more available graphics power on tap.

has anyone ever explained the 'link' feature to you?
Posted on 11/17/13 at 7:11 pm to CornDogCologne
Seriously you didn't know this from weeks and weeks ago? Been posted so many times the PS4 GPU is significantly larger.
But here, LINK
But here, LINK

You don't have to explain GPU's to ilikelsu, he knows computers as well as anyone on this site.

Doesn't mean he knows shite about PS4 or XB1's GPU, which is evident in his post.
