I need some help here, I've just getting started deer hunting seriously in the last two years. Im far from an expert on antler genetics so hopefully someone can help me out. Got a really cool looking young buck with double main beams on one side. Is it genetic where it will be bigger next year or was he damaged in velvet?

Most double main beam bucks I've seen have been healthy, not an expert on the matter but I would say it's genetics.

Would help to see pics. Most times, a deformity in the antlers is a result of trauma to them while in velvet, or healing from a non fatal shot the year before. Not always, as there are genetic deformities passed down. Toknow about your buck, i would think you would need to have pictures of him in years prior, or have bucks with similar antler traits, to determine if its genetic or traumatic. As far as it getting bigger, he will continue to gain mass or points to his beams as he matures

That buck may have some kind of injury so take him if you can. He may have normal horns next year.

That's my 2 cents anyway. I like racks with character.

One on right is a 2.5 year old 8pt. Love those bean fed deer. Took a 3.5 year old couple of weeks ago that looked like a cow.

I don't shoot 3.5 year old deer on our low fenced property. Killing young deer isn't a good idea anywhere.

Wtf, no fence, no guides, no lease. Im in the delta surrounded by beanfields. Of course the damn deer grow big. I've never paid for a hunt in my life.

I'm hunting an 80 yard wide woodline that connects the only 3 large patches of woods in thousands of acres crops. No one else hunts within 5 miles of me because this zone is pretty much bow only. Good scouting and luck. No fricking fence.

And thought it was was older, most who have seen pic thought it was 4+ until we looked closely. Hard to judge one that big bodied in thick brush.
