A savage 223 bolt action with a tasco 3x9x40 scope for my 7 year old. This will be his first year hunting and he is fired up.( almost as much as i am about it). Thoughts on this being a first gun for a 7 year old boy?

He'll be fine. Just use the right ammo.

I like a little more than a 223 for deer, but with a 7 year old you're limited. Do your research on ammo and you'll be able to put em down.

Practice, practice, practice. Make sure he can shoot well and is recommend hunting only stands where he'll be limited to 30-40 yard shots.

I do like the 223 in that you can make a sweet varmint rifle out of it once he outgrows it.

Congrats on getting your son into hunting and good luck.

The biggest buck I've ever seen in person was killed with a 22-250. Teach him to hit what he's aiming at and he'll be fine.

Agreed. Difficult to kill. But I killed a huge 8 point back in 1999 with a .223. Field dressed at 220ish lbs. Dropped him. Shot shoulder high bullet came out the top of his back and slit his back bone. Paralyzing his back legs. He was still alive trying to get up but couldn't. Had to pop him in his neck twice for him to die. Needless to say those .223 bullets don't do hardly any damage.

223 is a HORRIBLE choice for deer. WTF? So many great options out there.

Both of my daughters have killed many deer with there 223.
60 grain Federal Nosler Partion
They both shoot very well out to 100yrds and I don't let them take shots any further.
Shot placement is more crucial than with bigger calibers, but if he's not accurate with it, he shouldn't be hunting with it anyway.

he is pretty accurate with his ruger 10/22 with a 3 x9 x32 scope. he can put together a decent group at 100 yards thus far.

I bought my son a 20 gauge last year, but he was 9. I figured he could hunt everything I hunt with it. I'll probably get him a rifle next year.

the biggest hog i've ever seen killed was shot with a .223 - 503 lbs. it was a head shot. nothing wrong with a .223, just got to put it in the boiler room and all will be ok.
savage is making some really good guns now. most look like homemade sin, but they shoot, so who gives a crap. pretty guns that can't group are nothing but expensive dust collectors.

BP, the list is endless. 7mm-08, 308, 243 (can't believe I typed that), 260 Remington. Hell, why not a 270, 30-06, or 280 if he is a bigger 7yo? My nephew is 10 and skinny as hell. He's killed 2 this year with a 300wsm. As long as the LOP is good, they can be taught to deal with recoil.
