Each took over similar programs, so here is how they compare in their 1st 9 years as head coach at LSU.

# of Losses per year

...............McClendon ...... Miles
Year 1...............1....................2
Year 2...............4....................2
Year 3...............2....................2
Year 4...............3....................5
Year 5...............4....................4
Year 6...............3....................2
Year 7...............3....................1
Year 8...............1....................3
Year 9...............3....................3
TOTAL............. 24................24 (3 games remaining)

Record vs. Alabama coaches in 1st 9 years:

McClendon vs. Bear Bryant 2-5 -----(Bear was at bama 4 years prior to McClendon becoming head coach)
Miles vs. Saban 3-4 ----- (Saban came to bama in Miles 3rd year)

If you give Charlie Mac 2-3 more rent-a-wins a year like today they'd have virtually the same record

How many games did Mac's LSU teams play per season vs Miles' LSU teams? I don't know the answer, but I'd guess fewer.

As much as I dislike Miles as LSU's coach, I would note that these numbers are slightly misleading in that LSU played fewer games per season under Charlie Mac, thus those loses "hurt" more.

Of course, the reverse can also be said (expanded schedule allows for additional creampuffs and additional opportunity to pad winning percentage).

How many titles did Mac win in that time frame?

One...and it would remain his one and only conference title won in year 9.

Miles' teams have won 2, played for a third, won a national title and played for a second.

It's an interesting comparison, I'll give you that...but since the only thing fans of the program seem to care about any more are titles than I think it's a bit disingenuous not to point out that while the two men have similar records Miles' clubs have brought home the hardware fans seem to crave.

I'm not a huge Miles fan, but McClendon did not win a NC. He beat Alabama, what, maybe twice?

Incredible how LSU fans keep bringing up these two men from a different era. I wish some LSU fans would just go to WalMart, buy a $6 Alabama t-shirt and make it official for themselves.

And McClendon's losses for his last 9 years

10 3
11 2
12 3
13 5
14 6
15 3
16 4
17 4
18 5

What some of us are afraid of is a slide into a 2nd rate status based on the quality of some of our performances over the last 2 years. I want Miles to do better.

Meaningless stats unless you were trying to prove a point. What was your point? You need to edit to show that Cholly Mac played way fewer games per year (At least two).

No telling what the results would be had there been divisions in the sec or if the bcs had existed. A few rent a wins per year would have increased McClendon's win total over that stretch by a lot. Looking at losses is just a simple way or comparing 2 coaches.

Pumpers hate the McClendon comparisons.

They also hate the Coker comparisons.

A teams ranking has always been determined by its losses, not wins. Because everyone starts out undefeated and drops following losses. Look no further than undefeated Utah, Boise, N. Ill, etc. They dont move until someone else loses.

The comparison is very valid

Mac >> Miles

Mac had to face Bama cheating and had an inferior talent pool to draw from.
