Golf board: how should I have played this?

My club has a two day handicapped medal play tourney this weekend. I am a 14. Through 7 I am 3 over. Shoot your handicap and you are probably one of the leaders. Number 8 is a par 4. Probably 190 to the water and an island green about 60 yards over the water. I hit a 6 iron off the tee which is my 175 club. I catch it and end up on the edge with a tree right next to me. Can't hit chip because I have to keep it low.
Should I punch it and hope it sticks somewhere on....or chip back away from the tree and take the easy approach?
I made an 11. Went for it until I made it...on the fourth try. Like tin cup. Almost ran out of balls. Im 7 strokes back after round one. What should I have done?

Casual round - go for it.
Tournament - take the safe approach.

Problem is I am still a 14. I could chip back...and still dump it. At the time I was thinking I needed it to be in the money. Oops.

play it back. in an ametuer tournent, never ever give up strokes when you don't have too

You were 3 over thru 7
You were in good shape to shoot your handicap or way better
Punch shot to island green seems like a high risk shot

I played it back in my stance to keep it low...and chunked it. 3 times. 4th time was on back edge. Then 3 putt. Tomorrow I'm hitting the 8 off the tee

The mistake was made off the tee... On a hole that short be sure that u lay back far enough to keep the edge of the water and trees way outta play.

Should have taken easy approach

Exactly. The goal is to make bogey at worst. You tried to play like a scratch instead of a 14.

Then hit green and still give yourself a par putt. 2 putt bogey. You're a 14. 14 bogeys and 4 pars and you're perfectly on handicap.

On the bright side, that 11 won't hurt his handicap as bad as it will hurt his chances of cashing in the tourney

The one good thing is I have cashed in the last 3 tourneys. If you are a member of a club you know that brings a lot of shite talking. I am a great best ball partner. Medal...not so much

Don't listen to any of these dickheads.
Seriously.
Except JJ, he's cool.
