Look across the remaining big five conferences — Big XII, Big Ten, ACC, Pac-12, SEC — and you’ll find that West Virginia is basically the only true fly-over member of a conference. Leagues that have tried to create large collections of schools from all across the nation have been felled by the distances between the schools, not aided by the total number of television markets covered. Ask folks in the old Big East.

The ACC has had Boston College as a distant relative since 2005, but that league has just added Pittsburgh and Syracuse to its roster of teams. Even stretched from Massachusetts to Florida with a Western protrusion into Kentucky (with soon to join Louisville), the league’s states are still side by side by side by side. With Maryland’s departure to the Big Ten, the only gap in the line is the short distance between Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Moving forward, every ACC school will have a rival or two within its area. That goes for all the major conferences. Except for Big XII and its new bride, West Virginia. And as much as the Mountaineers were hoping/praying for Florida State or Clemson to join them, those schools would have just been closer distant relatives. The folks at FSU and Clemson would also now be asking for travel breaks when it comes to visiting places like Kansas State and Texas Tech.

West Virginia was in a dying Big East and was passed over by the ACC and the SEC. The school didn’t want to get caught without a chair when the music stopped so it jumped. There’s nothing wrong with that. But eventually the distance between Morgantown and its neighbors will become an issue that cannot be overcome.

Successful conferences, no matter how large they become, still provide schools with a few driving-distance rivals. The Big XII flying over states to reach so far east? That doesn’t fit the profile. There’s a reason the SEC never seriously considered adding schools that weren’t connected to the existing SEC footprint. And that reason is why the ACC schools that eyeballed the Big XII were wise to stay put.

With the new college football playoff, there is pressure upon the SEC to "get in line" with the other conferences for a 9 team scheduling format.

I wonder if the Big XII will be likewise and sufficiently pressured to add two teams in order to get to a 12 team league and offer a championship game. Again, if the SEC is to be pressured into going to a 9 team format, all participants should expose their best to a championship game as well.

This remains to be seen.

How would that enable Auburn to move to the East?

I still think that it was completly stupid of the Big XII to add WVU. I still don't think that Missouri doesn't completly belong in the SEC, but at least y'all actually border SEC states. And like someone said, can have natural rivalries with Arky, UK and maybe even Tennensee. WVU is just out there in no mans land. Them being in the Big XII makes it look like OU and all the other schools are playing an obligatory OOC game every year. They should've waited to join the B1G, or at least the ACC. They would've been a better fit overall cultural wise, especially in the B1G.

Columbia isn't THAT far from most of the SEC West schools. It would have been a big expanse had Mizzou joined the Big 10, or whatever it's called now.

I'm just glad they didn't land in the SEC. Every report I have read indicates they are a horrible fanbase.

I would like to see VA Tech in the Big 12. It would be a nearby school for WVU, but mostly I would love for that rivalry to come back. It's another rivalry that dates back to the Civil War.

The Big 12 should've added Louisville and Cincy when they had a chance. They could probably still get Cincy but they really need another team in that region and I'm not sure who else they could get worth adding.

I remember laughing when I heard the big12 added WVU after all the bluster from the powers that be in that conference about the troubles A&M would have traveling for sports in the SEC

I really wished that the big 12 would have stayed together with Texas A&M and MIssouri staying in the big 12.

MIssouri is not a huge Market and there are a lot of Illinois and Kansas fans in the state. I think the SEC would have been better off taking two of the following: Virginia Tech, NC State, Florida State, Miami, and Maryland. Though MD got a good deal by joining the big ten.

I loathed adding Missouri to the SEC but there is no scenario in which Maryland or NC State is a better add.

I have no idea why so many fans are high on NC State and VT. If we're going to add two more teams, at least aim high. shite, let's try for UNC

With all due respect, frick that.

My alma mater (A&M) needed a break from texas in the worst way. Rivalry aside, it was an extremely toxic environment that A&M would never have it's best interests looked out for.

I live in MO now. There's a much bigger market for SEC football and sports in general than you think. shite, the state basically shut down this weekend with Mizzou/SCAR, the unbeaten Chiefs, and the Cards in the world series.
