I am looking to get a new filet knife and was wondering what everyone used.

I like to use regular knives over electric knives, but I would love suggestions on electric knives also.

HATE my small Rapala. The larger ones may be better, but avoid the small ones.

As much as people bitch about the Mister Twister ones, I loved mine until it broke.

I have used both. If i only have a small to medium mess of fish to clean or if they are large big boned fish i prefer a regular knife. If cleaning a ton of trout an electric knife is hard to beat.

ETA: regular knife = dexter russel
electric knife = mister twister

Dexter Russell is what I usually use, but I picked up a mustad kit from Walmart the other day for $20 and was impressed.

Electric knives suck IMO, unless you're cleaning trout.

cleaning hundreds, electric

cleaning one man limit, regular knife

I like a thin 9" blade filet knife like what you get for under $5 at Academy.

Get several and a cheap sharpner and get to cleaning.

Dexter is what I have now, and have no problems with. Was just wondering if I was missing out on something better. I find that the narrow blades struggle withe the rib cages on redfish tho (what doesnt lol) i have a thicker blade and backbone on a knife from academy that really does well too.

I prob need to invest in a mister twister, I've just always enjoyed cleaning fish with a regular filet knife rather than electric

What kind of fish do you clean the most: tuna, redfish, bass, catfish?

Get the serrated dexter for the reds. Works like a champ.

It cleans the hell out of redfish and I don't have to worry about burning it up, so yes it does. If you're gonna get an electric knife, you might as well just get the $12 turkey knife from Walmart. That way, when it burns up, you're only out of $12.

Reds and trout normally

I've used serrated as well, and it works well too.

What i need to do is find a good knife sharpner too.

had my Mister Twister for 6 years. Didn't burn up.
You think those serrated edges on that Dexter Russel will hold up that long?

The best electric knife I have is a 1985 GE model. I think they geared them differently back then, because it is seriously much faster than any newer one. I've had numerous newer ones, and the nearly 30 yr old knife smokes them all.

I say "smoke" literally. It gets kinda hot and you have to set it down after about every 20 trout to let it cool off, and I make sure to wear rubber boots while in operation to thwart off electrocution. Nevertheless, it's badass. You can pick one up on Ebay for $15 or so.

i've got a rapala i've had for several years that came with two sizes of blades and runs either AC or DC. its held up to trout, reds, black drum, trigger fish, snapper, ling, bass, etc. however, i don't try and saw through rib cage bones on bigger fish with it. there isn't an electric knife on the market that can do that repeatedly and i doubt there ever was.
if more fishermen would try and filet the meat off a fish with some finess instead of hacking away most knives would last longer.
