From the CBS article:

quote:

It was obvious from the outset that Mississippi State's defense was loading the line of scrimmage to stop the run, daring LSU to throw. The Tigers obliged, grabbing big chunks of yards on the Bulldogs' defense.

"They were playing the run game a little bit hard," Beckham said. "I give all credit to Zach. He's been making all the right plays and all the right reads since the season began."

Not very smart on their defensive planning at this point with the stats to gather after six games.

I guess if you have to shut down one aspect of the offense, you have to stop the run, first.

Teams who can run the ball consistently and move the chains are way more dangerous for a number of reasons:

1) Longer drives (TOP-wise)
2) The defensive front gets much more worn down
3) More "sure-fire" yards (in that, passing leaves more room for error than running does, normally)

I hope this continues. Our receivers were running free all night.

That being the case why not pass every down that they have nine in the box. This type of defense obviously favors the passing game, They will have to take guys off the line to keep from getting burned and then start calling running plays. That being said we did get a TD running when they had a nine in the box against us.

The box is loaded because of our formations

exactly right. It isn't that they don't believe we can throw, it is that they know we can run too. When you can do either, you have a good offense.

This is what I was thinking. We throw out of the I a lot with only one or two guys wide.

This is a very good question. It will be interesting to see if teams continue to do this to us all year.

Please expand. It's hard to tell on tv, but I take it that we don't often have more than 3 wide. Does this mean opposing corners are playing man on Landry and Beckham?

Yeh I don't know why people on here are confused by this. Where else is a defense going to line up when you predominantly run plays with 2 wr, I formation sets?

Our formations do not spread the defense!

The only way to stop out passing game now is to sack Mett. If you sit back and give him time he'll still pick you part and we'll be able to run.

true, but loading the box is just as much about depth of linebackers and safeties. Mullen said after the game that MSU loaded up to stop the run.

All about matchups. Cam knew ODB and Juice one on one with Moo States inexperienced corners was an advantage for us.

Why is that a bad thing? We beat them big on big and have a quality qb who can make throws to our receivers who are being covered one on on with one safety back? I'll take that any day over a spread

State seemed to drop into zones most of the night. I am just saying if you have 9 offensive players at the line, in a formation with 2 wides the defense won't be spread out.

It wasn't a bad thing last night. Against Georgia though we struggled running into a loaded box(better dline and lbs)

We all know CLM loves to run the ball with a fullback leading the way. I love running teams over also but against some sec defenses I think it's ok to use some finesse early and then use the power as the game goes on.

Interception still more likely than fumble?
