Lets say you can only spend 5 million total on everyone. Do you spend like 4.5 million or whatever to bring in an elite HC like a saban or whomever else, or do you bring in a more moderate priced coach but heavily recruit and pay the best coordinators you can to go with the HC.

You try to be in the front of the mob heading for the NCAA exit, otherwise you get trampled to death.

It would have to be like 8 million to prevent current coaches from getting serious pay cuts.

Set it $100k above the highest salary pool in the NCAA and say thats the highest you can go.

That will allow other teams to play catch up knowing the big dogs are handcuffed.

ETA:

but frick that...we can afford the best so the current system works great for us

Seems like the NCAA would run into some legal challenges (antitrust issues), when they started limiting the amount of income that a coach can earn.

"Restricted earnings" coaches from the late '80s got a nice anti-trust settlement. NCAA won't go down that road again.

Beat me to it. The NCAA itself is barely relevant in college football now. If they start trying to add further restrictions, that would just hasten what I think is inevitable anyway: major college football will break away and they will run themselves.

+1

NCAA has no place in the free market..they need to not try to "socialize" college football.

The thread is about who you value in a coaching staff, not about the NCAA. The cap was just a way of setting up the decisions you'd be making in your answer. I'd go the elite HC route. Could I afford a top-tier (but not elite top-3) HC with one highly paid assistant and one cheap one under the HC's wing?

isn't it the truth. most people don't have a clue what the ncaa is; a voluntary self policing organization. any school can withdraw any time it wants to. and the op doesn't seem to understand the ncaa board would have to vote it in before they could try to enforce it. i guess ignorance is bliss.
