Sideshow Bob makes the most sense.

How is this even possible?

Not sure how old you are, but IMO, you are missing out on a pretty enjoyable slice of Americana. Of course the early seasons are money and even better as watching them as an adult.

I figure if they are going for an emotional beat then it has to be someone the main family loves. Abe is a leader because it impacts everyone, but Homer for sure. Barney dying would impact Moe's Tavern (unpaid tab) and Homer. Krusty and Sideshow Bob would impact Bart and Lisa.

Comes on weird times on Sunday. No replays. Ever. It's not syndicated.

That's sad. Even people I know who hate the show have seen at least one episode.

The episodes from the '90s are awesome.

I'd go with Sideshow Bob. He's not a recurring cast member (kelsey grammar). Though his character is pretty great.

My only reason why Bob isn't the favorite is that keeping Bob alive means that the writes always have a Bob episode in their back pocket...killing off a character already voiced by the main cast means they aren't losing a cast member and those characters are closer to the emotinonal impact to the Simpson family. Bob hasn't been on since seasoon 21(now in season 25).

Abe makes the most sense to me. He's often just a one liner an episode nowadays.

Would have the most impact while changing the least about the show.

I don't think they're going for an emotional impact. This sounds more like a desperate attempt at a ratings grab. They're also doing that Family Guy crossover this year so it seems like they've finally run out of ideas.

The what? Why is it not on Comedy central or cartoon network or something people actually watch?

I'll try to find a box set eventually and start from the beginning.

I bet those 80s episodes are brutal and not funny...like outdated satire.

I'll put seasons rouhgly 3ish through 8ish up there with as funny of a stretch as any comedy in history. Early simpsons was absolutely hysterical.

They've done this gimmick before, when they killed off Maude.

Go to the link above. Power through the first season and then settle in for probably the strongest 8 year stretch ever seen in a television show.
