I just always liked having 4 engines in case some of them broke

have you heard the old aggie joke about him being a passenger on a four engine plane that keeps losing one at a time?
but seriously, these new engines are so powerful and reliable, that anymore, you are more likely to lose all engines than just one, that would be in the case of volcanic ash, fuel contamination, or birds, that's not to say that you won't have on occasional engine failure or precautionary shutdown, but if an airliner has only two engines, it must prove it can do the job on one

I guess I just like the idea of redundancy...more engines = more chances of survival in my mind

ETA: who care about weight, fuel efficiency, etc. right?

the two engine heavies are equipped with a RAT(ram air turbine,) that will deploy if both engines are lost, that will provide hydraulics and electrics for flight control if that helps, they are awesome gliders

not true at all, the winglets provide a dramatic increase in fuel efficiency, the first time I flew a 767-300

Not on the 744. Its efficiency increase is mostly from changing the wingspan from 195 to 211 feet (and the different wing to fuselage fairing). I'm not saying those winglets (or the ones on the A330/A340) are completely worthless but they aren't as good as the Whitcomb winglets on the MD-11 or the 777 raked wingtips.

Now if APB had gone through with its 747 winglet retrofit program (using patented Big arse Winglets), yeah, those probably would've had good effect.

Reminded me of the story where a B-52 crew on approach informed ATC that the #2 engine was being shutdown as a precautionary measure. Someone on freq quipped,"Oh my, the dreaded seven engine approach..."

True or not, it was a good comeback.
