So I have the opportunity to buy a 2000 Wrangler with very low mileage. My only two things is that its Automatic and its a 4cyl. Really would like a 6cyl.

What the Jeep owners on the OT board take on this?

I have had 3, and the one I disliked the most was the Auto 4-banger. I loved both of my 6cyl manuals.

Trust me, you really want the 4.0 straight six, particularly if you are going to run an automatic transmission.

Not only for the better power, but they are tough engines, and will easily give you 250K mileage if you take care of them.

I have an older Cherokee with the 4.0 with 328K miles, and it still runs like a top, never overhauled and doesn't take oil.

Get the 6. I had a 1995 Wrangler - 4 cyl - 5 spd in high school and that was the most sluggish, gas burning contraption I have ever driven.

I hopped in an Auto 6 cyl. TJ one day and the difference was immediately noticed.

4.0L straight six is a great engine in the wrangler. I had a 2001 and it was a beast. Don't have any experience with the four banger but if you are just looking for a jeep to tool around in I think it would get the job done.

If it is an every day vehicle you probably want the 6. If it is a weekend/camp vehicle, I wouldn't mind the 4. Drive it until it blows and replace later if you want.

I had a 4cyl auto and hated it. Barely went up in tire size and it wouldnt pull them worth a damn. Also had tranny problems at about 40k miles.

I had a 6cyl manual and really liked it.

This would just be a second vehicle but I would like to power of the 6.

Jeep only has like 55,000 miles on it.

Agree if you can get it for cheaper than a new ATV why not.

Thing about wrangler TJ's is they are very elementary and as long as you keep the rust off them, you can have them forever if you maintain/replace the wear parts

Would not buy. You can live with it being an auto, but not a 4cyl.
