They are a marketing tool for the music industry to promote their product. No more. No less.
Every once in a while they will try to legitimize their award by giving a grammy to an important artist for an unimportant part of his/her catalog. This goes to show that they were never really paying attention to what that artist was doing in the first place.

So basically every knowledgable music board poster agrees that grammys dont mean shite. Except for ONE poster that brings up the grammy argument every time he defends his favorite teeny bopper.

I think at one point they meant something, but then the powers that be decided that they wanted the Grammys to be the MTV Video Music Awards.
I remember Stevie Wonder winning 5, Michael Jackson winning 5, Prince winning several in one night, etc.
I remember a 21-year-old Wynton Marsalis performing a piece from his debut classical album onstage, on TV at the Grammys and it was magnificent.
Now, not so much.
