Does any coach deserve some credit for sending OBJ out to return FG?

Just wondering what y'all think...personally I think Les might've had a hunch and sent him out to field the miss, but I know the Rant will never allow Les to be credited with doing ANYTHING smart, so....who, then- the special teams coach?
It's obvious from the result that we caught them off-guard; the field-goal team can't spend too much time practicing kick coverage. I mean, really, how common is it to even have anyone deep in case a FG try comes up short?

I would think you would always want someone back there on a Field Goal attempt. You never know when it is going to be short or partially blocked. Plus usually the kicking team is just standing around looking at the kick to see if it is good. I think more teams will be paying attention now on Field Goal Attempts!!

In most cases it is better to let the ball hit the ground on a miss than to try to return it. OBJ got lucky on that return and was able to get a touchdown against their slow kicking line, but he very well could have been tackled before he got back to the line of scrimmage where we would have taken over.

I've always said you need to send a guy back there past 50 yards. The coach needs to have that automatically in Beckhams head. He deserves credit for trying it. Most people never try. Think of all the short kicks that could have been.

Coach Miles said that was the Special Teams coach's call. He sent in OBJ to jump up and block the ball just in case it was close to the cross bar. Odell said in an interview that he saw it was short so he caught it

Um, I would think a number of them do exactly that. Probably everyone except the linemen play on kickoff and punt returns.

You want someone back there in case they try and punt it and pin you deep. In that case, you can return it and it forces there hand to either actually kick the thing or call TO and try plan B.

Special teams coach T-Mac told miles they liked to try long field goals during game prep week. So they had it planned to send OBJ back deep if they attempted.

No, but I'm sure there would have been plenty to criticize Miles had OBJ gotten hurt trying to return a field goal when the game was well out of hand.

This. The ST Coach told Odell to look and see if the OLs were just standing around watching the kick (in the event the FG was tried) and if so...to use his judgement as to returning.
It was an awesome play and well coached.

Of course the coaches deserve credit.
But, let's not pretend like this is unprecedented.

Peoples started running with the whole "he was sent in to block it" thing on the rant all week and I just let them run away with it.
