Never heard them. Will check it out.

Post rock examples:

Mogwai
Pelican
Russian Circles
Isis
Cult of Luna
Mono(Japan)
Don Caballero
Do May Say Think( just getting into this one)

These are some examples based off of my definition of Post Rock, although they may fall into other categories.

I can't really pick an album I would suggest starting on.

I only had The Four Trees for the longest time (several years), and just recently discovered that they had released Tertia & Waking Season.

All 3 are equally awesome to me, but I fell in love with them only listening to The Four Trees, so that may be a good place to start.

I find that people that aren't musicians have a problem understanding what post rock bands are.

They want to categorize them as "jam bands" when that is hilariously wrong.

no doubt, I agree.

just saying that there are people that want to categorize bands like mogwai and other post rock bands as "jam bands"

which is possibly the most retarded thing i've ever read on TD

Never heard of anybody confusing post rock bands with jam bands, pretty retarded. To answer OP, some of my fave post rock bands are: Mgwai, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, sigur ros, and Explosions in the Sky. Pretty typical list, but their all incredible.

Dock for the record I do not listen to jam bands.

I think Mogwai jams.

Eveything else is your concern.
