Meachem's signing should have nothing to do with Colston, being that they play two different WR roles.
He played in the last preseason game though. Did he have any setbacks?

can't we be stacked at a position without any issues? I mean he knows the system, probably came at the minimum too, so why not for a player that could potentially produce 600-700 and 6-8TDs

Vilma wasn't ready to go so they found a way to fill his roster spot on the cheap with someone they didn't have to teach.
If I had to guess, they might try to activate Johnson off the PS later once he has a better grasp of the defense.

I think everyone is reading too much into this. Vilma was going on IR regardless so it opened up a spot.
I thought they would pick up a LB(OLB specifically) since they are down to 8 now but anyone we picked up not named Richardson or Atkins wouldn't have helped this week. And Richardson and Atkins played poorly according to PFF(not that the coaches didn't see something different). Still think there's a chance one could come back after week one though(when the contract wouldn't be guaranteed).
As for Meach himself, he has great chemistry with Brees so he can come in and contribute right away. And I think with Colston still not 100% and the injury scare to Toon they just wanted veteran insurance in case something does happen.
