Agree great thread. Add Boutte. I know where you got your numbers, but they've been updated. Boutte was in on Anthony Jennings QB sneak.

That's why I can't understand the reasoning that we are ranked 12 because we lost so many to the draft , we play about 20+ people on each side of the ball . Or close to it

This was a big game too. A ranked BCS opponent in the Cowboy Classic in Jerrysworld. It had a bowl game feel to it.

Because when you lose Juniors the quality of that depth takes a hit (theoretically).

Desean Smith running routes in the red zone got me excited for the future. They already see him as threat near the goal line. His future is bright.

Really good thread.

I don't know why we burn redshirts so quickly and easily these days. MOst those guys could use a year to develop and aren't really needed this year. For example, why in the hell would we burn Bouttes redshirt year. Or Duke Rileys or Melvin JOnes

that's because the head coach that gets paid millions of dollars a year to recognize talent and put the best players on the field (among plenty of other things) decided that they were D1 ready and don't need "a redshirt year to develop"

Because our guys are going to the NFL anyway and very few will stay here for 5 years if they are any good. So, we might as well play them as freshmen and give them some experience---they will need it.

cos if they're as good as we KNOW them to be, they won't be here for 5 years. If they're not...."processed".

We don't sign a lot of redshirts. We sign impact players for the most part. Why waste a redshirt on a guy that won't be here long anyway? Might as well smoke em if ya got em.

The ones worth worrying about won't be here 5 years.

I've done a complete 180 on my opinion of redshirts in the last few years. I used to hate burning them. Now, I want as many to play as are ready.

For one, more and more guys leave for the NFL as soon as they are draft eligible. Brockers left after his redshirt sophomore season, so we only got two seasons out of him.

Also, it helps develop players more quickly and helps you build depth.

And, if they are ready to contribute, even on special teams, they make your team better.

Somewhere along the line LSU (1 among a couple of schools) changed it's recruiting philosophy and coaching. We assume the best are only going to be around 3 years.

The biggest change is the position-numbers (i.e. why do we take a position we just stocked up on). LSU gives a freshman playing time if he's behind a junior for sure, and everybody competes for playing time on the practice field.

I think I would rather red shirt than be used strictly on special teams. Unless I was a punt retuner or something like that. Just saying...
