Hey Red shirts help a lot too guys!!! Look at Jerred Allen.... he looked freakn good out there and knew exactly what he was doing, that's in part because he had all that time to work on technique and get stronger/smarter as a player. I like Redshirts myself BUT I also like to play freshman, we played lots of Frosh on ST and it showed also! If I were doing it, I would simply play the guys that deserved to play and the ones that needed to mature and work on certain things I would RS no matter how highly touted they were! If you don't work for it and deserve it, you don't get it!!! ST or not!!! Like the freak when he came to LSU, he even said himself he wasn't ready for SEC FB and didn't prepare the right way! I would of RS him!!! Just because your highly touted doesn't mean your ready! Some are.... Like Jennings, he worked his butt off to be ready and that's the atmosphere I would want to create.... Not if you come, you play...... NO!! If you come and prepare yourself to play, you play PERIOD!!! But I think Les is doing just that now a days!!!

The huge the about this is that we had a big game to start off with and these dudes got some time. Albeit most is special teams, but nonetheless, they were out there.

I think I would rather red shirt than be used strictly on special teams. Unless I was a punt retuner or something like that. Just saying...

Unless you really want to break records at your school, conference, or the nation.
Unless you believe you can win it all (Championship).
Unless your draft grade is not high enough for your.
Unless you just love your school

These are the reasons people stay four years. Almost all of these are determined after years in the program. Think about it, how many players stay for a fifth year, or even want to stay for a fifth year? No coach/school takes away your scholarship unless you got in big trouble so you should be graduating in no more than 4 years.

So again it makes no difference to burn a redshirt on special teams because you basically have 4 years to work with and still 3 full years after cutting your teeth on S/T.

For example, why in the hell would we burn Bouttes redshirt year

Technically it's not yet. Lorenzo Phillips played in the first 4 games last year and still got redshirted. They try some guys early on and then decide if a redshirt is needed. Most of the good players only stay for 4 years. So a redshirt isn't always necessary.

I thought that once a player plays a down, he's intelligible to redshirt unless it's for medical reasons?

Doesn't matter. I know posters here said Boutte played but he is not listed in the game participation list by LSU.

My point here in this post is that LSU has "seen the light" in recruiting similar to UK in basketball. Calapari is bringing in #1 class after #1 Class because those kids know they will play and can leave when ready or stay. LSU has seen that these young men are coming in ready to play physically and can do so in their freshman year. The LSU coaches realize which ones can leave in three years (redshirt or not) and get the full three out of them. If they RS then these same talents will only play two.

Look at Landon Collins. Do you think he would be sitting the bench at LSU three yrs out? He cant go pro because he has not played any significant game time.
