Is anyone else optimistic about how good we could be on D?

Spin off of the chicken little thread. Panicking about a D before a real game is played is silly, especially since this one has had some attention paid to it this offseason.

D Line - you have to be excited about how solid this unit looks. We might have the best line we've had in the Payotn era. Jordan will be unblockable and with the addition of undrafted rookie Foster, he's just another new piece that showed a knack for gettting to the QB.

Linebackers - You know we'll get solid protection up the middle from Lofton and Hawthorne. Tez and Junior haven't played in preseason, but we all know their skills are suited for a 3-4. Tez really is an athletic freak who should now be ready to fully contribute. Junior brings pure speed. The trade for the lineback from SF was solid as well.

Safeties - Really the only spot that makes us shake our heads. Jenkis and Harper were ranked as the two worst starting safeties in the league last year. But now enter Vaccaro who has all the makings of a stud. A solid tackler who seems to always be around the ball. He will be special, and the Saints may have finally gotten a great defensive player with their 1st round pick.

Cornerbacks - Keenan Lewis, Jabari Greer, and Patrick Robinson playing in a system that is more sutied to his skill set could give us a decent trio that will certianly cause problems for receivers.

Rob Ryan - Ryan brings an intensity to his side of the ball, something Spagnola didn't, and the D fed off of his lack of fire. The switch to 3-4 will have some initial growing pains, but honestly we played a 4-3 last year with players more suited to a 3-4 scheme.

The season is bright and I'm optimisitc we will make great strides this year in improving a terrible D.

If we had more depth at linebackers and corners i would agree with your analysis

if anything the 3-4 look will make us more "multiple" (i love that word. i think i know what it means? )

so we'll have an advantage out of the gate and be less predicatzble for a few games until teams figure out how to move the ball on us. Then we'll just have to play good D.

This dude. Starting the season off with 6 sacks on Matty Ice and that crappy o-line will be a great way to kick things off

Things I love: The whole Dline 2 deep. Vaccaro.

Things I like: Harper's new role. Greer. The whole ILB group 2 deep.

Things I'm optimistic about: Galette, Wilson, and Haralson. Lewis playing more like he has in practice and less like he has in the games.

Things that concern me: CB outside of Greer. Malcom Jenkins playing safety and not NB.

Overall I think this looks much more like a Williams' defense(less turnovers but more sound fundamentally) and absolutely nothing like last year's Spagfest.

My expectations have actually increased greatly especially since we only gave up 1 big run all preseason and that was to one of the best running teams in the league. And it still didn't go for a TD which means we fought the whole play.

I think we will have an improved pass rush which should help our LBs and secondary in coverage.

I think it's the exact opposite.
This d is going to be built on turnovers, not technique, which is more of Williams' style and not Spags'.

This D isn't going to be good

In reality though it just needs to be better than last year, which it should be.

Good is top 20 right? This isn't a top 20 D.

Good is a very general term. I think they will be "good enough".

I'd say top 20 in yards, top 15 in scoring, and PLUS in turnovers. There will be a lot less missed tackles (as proven already in the preseason), and the safety play will improve slightly (if for nothing, just scheme). I think Vaccaro is a star in the making and I LOVE David Hawthorne at his more natural position. Lastly, I absolutely can't wait to see Wilson and Galette in this D.

ETA: Very important...I think you'll see more pressure from the front. Ryan won't have to blitz every down just to get a rushed throw. That was something they could not do at all last year.

Me as well. If we had this defense, based on the small sampling I have seen so far, last year would we could have gone 8-8/9-7...Sean Payton could have given us at least two more games (just look how we did with Joe back on the sidelines). So that being said we could have been roughly 10-6 last year. So yeah, I am optimistic to say the least. So...

Yeah, that's really the only thing we can be optimistic about. We have the addition of Vaccaro, Lewis and Haralson and deletion of Ellis and changing of DC. I still don't see improvement by leaps and bounds.

This. Top 20 is best we can hope for I think.

Im way past giving the defense the benefit of the doubt or being optimistic about how they'll perform.

I'll just expect them to be awful and be pleasantly surprised if they aren't.

Fine, but let us have our hope.
