Just saw his interview for 4k.
Had an interpreter.
Had an interpreter.

He does. Doesn't do interviews without an interpreter because he doesn't want to say anything incorrectly.

Vlad Guerrero was pretty much the same way. Hardly ever heard him say anything in English.

quote:
I think it's the pace of the conversation. Similar to the Pope. He can understand and speak several languages. Just takes time to gather it all in a conversation.
He understands the language fine and I'm sure he doesn't use the interpreter outside of press conferences.
Notice how he never needs someone to interpret questions asked by reporters, he just uses the interpreter to translate his answers form Japanese to English.

If I went to Japan, I wouldn't try to learn that crazy language so I'm good with Ichiro.

I think Ichiro is the most interesting man in the world but he deprives us by not speaking English publicly more than a couple of times a year.

What's the story about him shocking all of the new guys at the ASG by exploding into profanity laced tirades

it was in a Yahoo article a few years ago. He stands up and starts shouting about how they are going to frick up the National League and beat their asses, etc. it shocks the young guys who think of him as a stoic guy who can't speak English.

He has so many awesome quotes from when he was in Seattle. This guy compiled some of them here LINK
Here's a few (although that link has a lot of interesting ones)...
On playing in Cleveland: "To tell the truth, I'm not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to. If I ever saw myself saying I'm excited going to Cleveland, I'd punch myself in the face, because I'm lying."
On his personal battles with Dice-K: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul. I plan to face him with the zeal of a challenger."
Explaining why he missed catching a fly ball: "The ball became the same color as the sky. So, I wasn't able to see it ... I was sending mental signals for the ball not to come my way, because during that time of day it's impossible for me to see the ball so I lacked mental signals. I lacked in that area. Usually, I don't send mental signals. So, because this is the first time, I thought, please don't come my way."
On how to break out of a slump: "If I'm in a slump, I ask myself for advice."
On great athletes: "Tiger is a great golfer, but ... when you say athlete, I think of Carl Lewis. When you talk about (golfers or race-car drivers), I don't want to see them run. It's the same if you were to meet a beautiful girl and go bowling. If she's an ugly bowler, you are going to be disappointed."
On the Wrigley experience: "I have many different Ichiros inside me. I'm always one of them."
