Making a case for Brees as the best QB of this era

Much like Brady and Manning, Brees has consistently put up spectacular numbers.

But here's the big difference: Brees, far more than either the other two, has also consistently suffered with the yoke of bad defenses hanging around him.

Most of those defenses were bad. But none of those defenses were worse than the unit Brees was paired with in 2012. The Saints last year fielded the first 7,000-yard defense in the history of football, surrendering 7,042 yards. They were statistical light years worse than the 31st-ranked Giants (6,134 yards). The 2012 Saints also surrendered 454 points, second worst in franchise history, behind the 1-15 Saints of 1980.

Brees must be used to the burden by now.

In his 11 years as a starting quarterback (2002-05 with Chargers; 2006-2012 with Saints), he’s played with a top 10 defense in either scoring or total defense just once: the 2010 Saints ranked No. 7 in scoring D and No. 4 in total D

winning the super bowl in 11 would have put his name up there with a guy like Brady. SB titles hold a lot of weight.

If he was a prettyboy in a huge market, with his accomplishments he would be annoyingly praised. He would also have an easier schedule if he played for new England or new York.

If we had a better defense all those years, Brees' numbers wouldn't be nearly as impressive.

A lot of teams have a bad defense. He put up those numbers because he has the skill.

Critics say that Brees has a huge flaw in his game, that he commits too many turnovers. He did lead the NFL in INTs in 2012 with 19. But his career INT rate (2.683%) is almost exactly the same as Manning’s career INT rate (2.682%). Brady is well ahead both in this category (2.06%).

Brady has never, for the most part, been asked to carry as much of the offensive load as Manning or Brees. Even in his other great seasons recently their entire system was predicated on short passes to Welker and the two tight ends who racked up yards after the catch. There's a reason Brady has so few Ints over the course of his career

I've always thought the fact he led the Saints to the XLIV Championship by beating 3 HOF Quarterbacks was very impressive and rarely gets mentioned. He was nearly flawless.

It amazes me how we had that good defensive year, and then it just went away.

I'm really hoping the new DC makes the difference. The 3-4 still scares me a little. But I feel we will get in the playoffs and may even win the south.

I know right?

125.4 QBR - 247 yards 71.9 completion % and 3 TDs against ARI and 2 time MVP Kurt Warner

106.5 QBR - 197 yards 54.8 completion % and 3 TDs against MIN and 3 time MVP Brett Favre

114.5 QBR - 288 yards 82.1 completion % and 2 TDs against IND and 4 time MVP Peyton Manning

no turnovers, and his only sub-par game was against MIN who was the #6 ranked defense in the league in yardage and the #10 ranked defense in points allowed per game at 19.5pts

Not to mention...what he did to the Patriots that year.

In a pure entertainment value point of view , i would take Brees over any other QB. Watching the guy dissect a defense is magical.

I see it as

Manning
Brady
Brees

now a hair separates each one and this could be in any order by the end of the season or the distance can grow or it can stay the same.

I think brady only gets a nod over brees for the super bowls, which i don't judge qbs by those, but when the numbers are so effin close. Manning has played longer.

Drew will be the best of the 3 with another incredible season + another super bowl. He'll top brady with another incredible season with brady not winning a super bowl. Manning would have to have another incredible season without any of the others winning a SB, but if he has an incredible season and a SB...he cements his status as the GOAT.

Manning is the best in terms of "body of work"
Brady has had the greatest success.
Brees probably has been the best for the range of years in NO.
Honestly, its 6:1 half dozen. All three could be considered the GOAT when all careers are finished.
