1. What plate?
2. And? It still appears to be a horribly thrown pitch.

maybe, but you can tell that ball is coming from a lefty and was tailing a lot. that had to be hard to pick up.. scary

Heyward bats with his heels against the back of the batters box. He's so far off the plate that it seems impossible for his face to be anywhere remotely close to the plate. The gif doesn't show where he was at in the box like the video does. Suffice it to say he was no where close to the plate, much less "diving over the plate"

Not to mention the catcher's glove movement...

Video

After watching the video, I agree, he wasn't out over the plate. Looks like it hit a good bit of his ear flap though, luckily.

i don't understand why he stands so far off the plate... if he's not lunging forward, he probably has time to get out of the way... his momentum takes him towards the plate, no way to reverse that in time.

His arms are really long so he still covers the entire plate. He didn't "dive" toward the plate. He was starting his stride. Still a very bad miss by the pitcher.

Appears that way but he's not even close to the plate.
