Audit finds NSA broke privacy rules thousands of times per year since '08

quote:

The National Security Agency has broken privacy rules or overstepped its legal authority thousands of times each year since Congress granted the agency broad new powers in 2008, according to an internal audit and other top-secret documents.

Most of the infractions involve unauthorized surveillance of Americans or foreign intelligence targets in the United States, both of which are restricted by law and executive order. They range from significant violations of law to typographical errors that resulted in unintended interception of U.S. e-mails and telephone calls.

In one instance, the NSA decided that it need not report the unintended surveillance of Americans.

In another case, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which has authority over some NSA operations, did not learn about a new collection method until it had been in operation for many months. The court ruled it unconstitutional.

The Obama administration has provided almost no public information about the NSA’s compliance record. In June, after promising to explain the NSA’s record in “as transparent a way as we possibly can,” Deputy Attorney General James Cole described extensive safeguards and oversight that keep the agency in check. “Every now and then, there may be a mistake,” Cole said in congressional testimony.

Rogue agency

CptBengal, calm yourself...

The Dear Leader knows what is best for you, and all of the comrades, in this country. If it will help, I will report you so that you can attend reeducation studies to understand that the Dear Leader has your best interest at heart....

pg 2
quote:

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who did not receive a copy of the 2012 audit until The Post asked her staff about it, said in a statement late Thursday that the committee “can and should do more to independently verify that NSA’s operations are appropriate, and its reports of compliance incidents are accurate.”

superb, diligent oversight right there

Congress needs to step in and fix this. I want a civil liberties ombudsman in the process. I won't hold my breath, though.

This is one of the more egregious oversteps in modern history.

We are now at a point where the laws we have are not followed AT ALL by those we elect. They skirt the laws using one justification after another. The NSA, giving Egypt aid against the limits set in the aid package itself, the IRS abusing its power, selectively enforcing laws.

It's time to hold these folks accountable. I can't stand this shite. There's no honor or integrity. Our Constitution is being raped.

Wait. Decatur said it was all legit. Are you saying Decatur was wrong? He won't like that.

This is really sad and pretty damn scary. It would be great if we had a system of government that allowed it's citizens some control so we could stop things like this. One can dream.

I don't believe it... Our leaders and the people in charge have told me this is all perfectly legal and there is nothing to fear.

It appears that the NSA is gathering EVERYTHING and then finding ways justify searching through it...

It's exhausting getting (legitimately) pissed over our government and it's crimes with the right people not being held accountable. Sadly, nothing will come of any of them.

08? See, it's all Bush's fault. It's racist to blame the One.

Remember when Obama said the NSA wasn’t “actually abusing” its powers? He was lying.
