SI Offseason Grade: Pelicans...B-

LINK /

B-

Summary:

quote:

The large salaries tied to Holiday (whose four-year, $41 million extension that he signed with the Sixers kicks in this season) and Evans make their acquisitions more perilous if all doesn’t go according to plan, and New Orleans surrendered two first-round picks as part of its makeover. But most moves to improve involve risks, and the Pelicans have a solid chance to give Evans a proper developmental toolkit, Holiday a perfect home and Gordon a fresh start

When are people going to realize it takes an incredible amount of luck to build successfully through the draft? The Spurs and Thunder are anomalies, the norm is the Washington Wizards or Toronto Raptors. And not only that, but the two picks we gave up were a 200 pound center with a bum knee and a pick that probably would have been around the 8-12 range. Next Summer, when the Pelicans capture the 6th seed and the 76er's are selecting 20th, people will realize that we trade raped the shite out them.

Never. But probably about half way through the season it became obvious that the Timberwolves pick the Hornets traded CP3 for wasn't going to be very high. I would assume by the All Star break if Holiday is playing well, the Pelicans are above .500 and the Noel isn't playing, people's opinion of how bad Philly won that trade will change.

People's opinions of the trade won't change until the lottery is held and Philly comes up at 4th or worse.

We may "only" have gotten a #10 pick in the CP3 trade, but it freed us up to tank down to tying for the 3rd worst record in the league and getting Davis.

If Philly has the worst record in the league and doesn't end up with a top 3 pick, there's no spinning how badly that trade has worked out for them.

Hell, as blatantly as they're tanking, getting someone other than Wiggins would be a disappointment for them.

Everything about that statement you quoted is factual. We gave up 2 draft picks for another player.

This sounds good.

We took on some salary, but we took on a lot of talent too. My only issues are holes at the 5 and 3. At some point we'll have to trade someone to get players to fill those holes, but for now the future looks bright.

Yeah. Much of the success of this roster will hang on how creative the coaching staff will be and if/when they get everyone to buy in.

Optimistic on the latter, jury's still out on the former.

Solid review, can't disagree with too much.

I also appreciate him not acting like losing Robin Lopez' defense was like losing a DPOY candidate, something i've seen a lot.

Two probably shitty draft picks. I've seen multiple people saying that the 76er's won the trade and are "building the right way". When in reality, the pick is going to be low and Noel probably won't be all that great. Also, I would expect a historically shitty season from a ton of teams trying to tank for Wiggins so the chances for the 76er's to get him are even slimmer. They've screwed themselves not only in the short term, but also in the long term if they don't get Wiggins.

I expect Philly to take the "lead" on this one, even with other teams tanking, given how depleted their roster is, but that still doesn't guarantee a lottery win.

I think most of the "experts" realize that the Pelicans rebuilding plan is flawed. They have capped themselves out with 2nd tier players in the hope that Davis becomes a superstar very quickly. Otherwise they have very little options. Everyone on here can mock lottery picks, but they are the best value and the best way to build. If you would honestly say that you would rather a semi-proven vet in Evans making 12m a year over a lottery choice like McClemore making 4m a year, you are fooling yourself. Lottery choices give you the flexibility to find star players and surround those stars with cheap salaries. The Pelicans are doing it in reverse. I'm just surprised more people on here don't see that.

Perhaps one day, when we have absorbed enough of your knowledge and expertise, we will see the light.

One could say Davis is already very close to being a superstar. In his last 19 games, in 32 minutes per game, he recorded 16.1 points (58.2% true shooting percentage), rebounding splits of 12.5 / 26.1 / 19.3 , and a turnover rate of 9.7%.

Overall, he had an ORTG of 119 and a DRTG of 102 which loosely translates to a WS/48 of around .200. That's superstar level.

Sportswriters and commentators do not necessarily equal "experts" . . . not by a longshot.

You are sooooooo wrong about the contracts not being movable.

What statistically meaningful examples can you really give other than the lightening in the bottle OKC caught? And, frankly, that example in and of itself is not statistically meaningful.

We have capped ourself out, but that means we will have to trade away some player at some point. I expect us to trade EG, Ryno or Tyreke at some point.

My guess is EG. Biggest contract and we have a 2 who is as talented. With a good back up in Rivers.

In that sense, every team is pretty much "capped out".
