Need help with lawn. Yard experts welcome!

Just got my first house and I finally have a decent size yard. Problem is that the yard has crap grass and is full of weeds. It is beginning to die from the heat and lack of water (which I am fine with) but I want to know what to do so that it will come back next year much nicer.
I will include pictures at the end of this post for yall to see. I believe that the grass is part centipede but no clue what else is mixed in. Can someone confirm what kind of grass is growing in my yard?
What kind of fertilizer do I need to spread so that it will kill the weeds and protect the good grass during the summer? Does anyone recommend a hybrid fiscue grass seed to be planted during the winter?
I am sure that I am leaving lots of info out and hope that yall will be able to give some advice to get this yard back in good shape.

Im in the same situation. I don't know what to do. Thinking about killing it all and starting over.

Weed & Feed (you can find this at the box stores; its in a garden hose- adaptable spray bottle)it twice a month for two months and see if it improves. It should kill any crab or nut grass or clover. You ever notice that you have dollarweed growing, dont bother, it cant be stopped.

I know for sure that I am planting Rye grass this winter and letting it take over. I will see what comes out on top in the spring but I will probably get a few bags of hybrid fiscue from HD and spread it in March.
Honest, the weed and feed is all that I need? Can you confirm that what I have is centipede?

As hot as it is right now, fertilizer or weed killer feed might burn and kill what grass you have left...

That is part of my concern.
I was thinking about trying some of This and seeing what would happen. Anybody have any opinions of that fertilizer?
Also, 40-50% chance of rain all week would make it a good day to spread some of this too, right?

I think that is an October product, but I don't have a recommendation for a product to use. You can go to Clegg's or one of the other nurseries in Baton Rouge and let them make some recommendations...

I am doing some reading on it to try and figure it out. I will probably end up at a nursery soon anyways.

LSU Ag center puts out free newsletters every few months or so. Most feed stores and nurseries has them and they have alot of info about lawns/ trees/ gardens etc. it may even be online. I would also agree its too hot to fertilize now

Rye will die by May. It will also weaken the centipede you have.
Yes just water, now, and fertilize a little. No need to start over or anything crazy.

Don't worry about it this year. Just keep it watered enough to keep whatever you have alive. Be sure to not overwater...you have a lot of thatch and you can end up with fungus growth if you over water.
Fall:
In the fall, rake out all that dead thatch a little before the St. Augustine grass goes into hibernation. Gonna be a pain in the rear, but do it.
February:
Mow yard down pretty low. Rake up all the cuttings.
Apply a pre-emergent herbicide.
March (or 30 days after previous step):
Apply slow-release granule fertilizer (3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio)
Set your mower deck height as high as it will go (at least 3 to 3.5 inches...I mow at 3.75 or even 4.0 inches).
Religiously mow at least every single week. The grass will thicken up and choke out any weeds.
Late June or Early July:
Apply another slow release granule fertilizer.
General:
Try to avoid Weed-n-Feeds, especially those that contain Atrazine. Atrazine is very persistent and contaminates groundwater.
If you do choose Weed-n-Feed, only use 50 to 70% of the amount they recommend.
I get my supplies from BWI Companies. They can offer great advice as well. I don't know if they'll sell in a small enough quantity for a subdivision lot (I've got a big frickin' yard I can't wait to sell). If they won't sell to you, ask them for a local agent referral.

Thats the plan. I was going to use it to choke out the bad grass and then plant seeds in the spring, if necessary. Since you think the centipede looks fine, I wont choke it out.

I will start to water and may do a weak fertilizer or something till late fall then try the "Scotts 15,000 sq. ft. Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Fertilizer". Hopefully if all this works, Ill only need to weed and feed in the spring.

Your planting fescue in spring?
That won't grow very good in BR. Will look great in the winter but suffer in the summer.

We had some at LSU. It will live in the summer but requires more care. But it can be done. Not sure I would say it will thrive in heat. But it looks great October to May.

Thanks for the heads up. Not worth killing my centipede if it's a a good as other posters have said it is.

You ever notice that you have dollarweed growing, dont bother, it cant be stopped.
There is also a herbicide called Dicamba. Brand names for formulations of this herbicide include Banvel, Diablo, Oracle and Vanquish.
