We lost our 12 yr old weimeraner a few months ago and we are thinking about a new dog. My 6 yr old son is convinced he wants a beagle. Dog would be both inside and outside and would get a fair amount of attention and exercise. No intention to hunt with it, just a house pet for me and the kids. I am also considering a vizsla and a lab but I like the idea of a smaller dog. Anyone have experience with a beagle as a true family pet, any other breeds I need to want to consider?
TIA

Beagles are stubborn, bark a lot, and if they get on a rabbit or squirrel scent they are locked in. Even if it runs across the road. That's why you see a lot get hit by cars.

I have a beagle. Yes, he is stubborn, but hardly ever barks. If he barks you know something bad is going down. I think they are good family dogs.

They do pretty good as pets, but even ones not used for hunting still have that drive, so keep that in mind that they will follow their nose. On the other hand my rabbit beagles like to come in the house, ride the 4 wheeler, ride in the front seat of the truck, play fetch etc etc.

Snoopy was a beagle, what more do you need to know.

Easy to love dogs, but dumb as posts.

Obviously you understand that breeds are genetically programed for specific "jobs". If you want to hunt get a dog designed to hunt. If you want a house pet then get a dog designed to be a house pet. Don't be one of those who gets a dog because it looks cool or they like the breed and then can't understand why it's a handful.

I have a 2 year old female I am looking to give away. She is spayed and has all shots. The sooner the better. I am moving.

Our neighbor has a beagle (female) - inside and outside dog, but mostly inside and especially at night. Barks like crazy when let out in the morning and evening as there are plenty of squirrels around. Other than that, seems like they like the dog and all is good.

Have one as a house pet and have to say a lot of truths in this thread.

Awesome pet, super attached to us. Protects my wife, but has no problem when the niece and nephews play rough with her or pull her hair/tail. Honestly has never snapped at anyone.

They take a pretty long time to housebreak, but barking and tearing up furniture has never been a problem. Obviously ownership has a huge part on their behavior there as well.

If you don't have a fenced in back yard you might have some trouble keeping them near. They like to roam and their nose/belly rule their world. Pretty smart if you work with them and are food motivated so you can get their attention pretty easy.

I had two Beagles growing up. They're great family dogs and are fantastic with kids. They do tend to howl a lot (like at the ice cream truck) and they'll like to dig under the fence to go follow their nose. They'll also be a bit difficult to housebreak but it's doable. I loved my Beagles; solid dogs all around.

We have a beagle for house pet & she is great. Wouldn't want a lab for inside dog because they shed so bad.

We had a 13" growing up, awesome dog. We lived way out so he had plenty of room to roam around, with a collar of course. He was gun shy so never could hunt with him but that little bastard could run down a squirrel like a bawss. He liked to go out on the boat too. Never had trouble training him, but pretty short attention span, only barked if something was in the yard. Solid choice IMO, just make sure try get plenty of exercise.

I've owned a ton of beagles. Mostly as hunting dogs. What they say is true. These little frickers are absolutely driven to hunt. You don't have to do squat with them, they are hunting if they are breathing. And when they're not breathing, it's because they are barking. And when they're not barking, they're getting out of whatever enclosure you have them in. Either under it or over it.

I've seen beagles climb seven foot tall cyclone fences to escape and go hunting. They're cute dogs. But they are pure hound so they are stubborn as hell and what you want to do better line up with what he wants to do or you're gonna be adjusting your plan to accommodate his.

I love beagles. Nothing I'd rather hear than a pack on a rabbit. But I wouldn't own one as a pet. Not when you could have a BMC and get a much better family dog that will hunt also, has good manners, listens, doesn't bark for no reason, stays in his yard because he's protecting it and you, and generally is just way the hell better a pet.

Had a beagle once. Sweet, but stubborn as hell. Difficult to house break. She was really smart, just refused to get with the program.

She was so stubborn that she could "will" her way through an invisible fence. A bark collar hardly worked....she'd just keep trying and wince from the shocks as she barked.

Incessant chicken mauler. Climbed a 6-foot hurricane fence kennel wall.

Still, a very loving animal, just very frustrating and requiring much management....kinda like a wife.
