Is getting unemployment for a week worth it?

I'm getting laid off tomorrow. I start my new job in two Mondays. Would it be worth it to file for unemployment for just a week?

Personally, I value my time and hate being around wal-mart type people. I'd stay home.

If you qualify, take advantage. You can sign up for it online. You have to provide three listings where you have applied for work each week to get the benefits. They send you a debit card and fund it every week, as long as you keep providing evidence that you are actively looking for work.

I applied in January after being laid off. Worked a PRN job one day the first week after applying. Never received a payment as I made more that day than the max benefit. Found a new job shortly after.

Congrats on getting a new job so quickly! I would take the week and spend it doing something that work has kept me from doing. I wouldn't waste any time trying to get one week of unemployment.

Show some pride and don't do it. It's pretty obvious you don't need the money. You do this you never get to bitch about lazy welfare queens or democrats or whatever else pisses you off ever again.

In louisiana, the first payable week of Unemployment is called the "Week of Waiting" and you are not paid. You begin collecting after the 2nd week being filed for.

If you have a definite return to work date, you may not be able to collect benefits if you only file for one week.

No idea whether it is worth it. How much would you receive, and how much do you value your time?

I disagree with this, as it's a totally different situation. If you get laid off but you're a quality citizen looking for/finding work, I have no issue with it. I personally can't afford to lose a week or two of pay so anything would help.

Exactly..Considering this is what unemployment was created for in the first place.

Yea I am not seeing any problem with this guy taking unemployment, considering he has another job. It baffles me when someone uses it and has no intent to start work anytime soon.

Unfortunately it's these assholes who make it a tough decision for the ones that really need it. No one wants to join them.

As GFunk said below, you have a week of waiting before you can receive benefits. However, if you file tomorrow then this week can be your week of waiting (at least that is how it was 10-15 years ago). Make sure to go online tomorrow and file during the day.

And you do have to call in (maybe it's online now) each week to file. If you start a new job in 1.5 weeks then you could get $258 (if max amount) after calling in for next week.

I would definitely do it. Your employer should be grateful that you are finding a new job so quickly and they are only responsible for your unemployment for 1 week. Apply for it. Frick them.

Are you getting any sort of severance or vacation pay?

I did get severance, I'm not hurting.

I'm torn between "I've put money into it, why can't I get some out" and "not wanting to be part of the 47%."

Any severance/vacation pay will be factored into your unemployment. If you are eligible for $258/week and got $2500 severance then you would not be eligible for approx 10 weeks.

All this information is dated from 10+ years ago when I worked a student job at LDOL. Definitely check into it tho in case things have changed.

Damn. I got a pretty big severance check. I'll look into it but doesn't look like it will work.

Thanks

This is why I said it. He doesn't need the money at all according to his own statements. I wasn't arguing about people who might die or something if they don't apply.

Taking money from public coffers without need doesn't seem right to me, but many my ethical code is fricked up.

It's not like he is taking tax money from me or you. His employer pays UI (unemployment insurance) tax to cover this. If the employer is not having successful unemployment claims against him then he is paying very little UI tax. If they are continually letting people go for unjust reasons then they will pay a lot more.
