Gladwell declares himself a fan of college football but argues it probably has no place in serious academic institutions like the University of Pennsylvania (where he gave a recent talk on this issue). Weigh in. For serious academic institutions where the institutional goals are academic, not athletic should football be removed?

Gladwell makes a serious argument that needs to be at least considered. Here are a couple links with his editorials/talks/interviews on the subject.

First link: Should college football be banned (the second story on the page below a discussion of China's economy):

LINK

Second link: The Nature of Proof talk at U Penn (discussion on college football starts at the 25 minute mark, the introduction he gives talks about the dangers of coal mining)

25 minute mark starts football discussion

Third link: How different are dogfighting and football really?

I don't care that his books are interesting and easy reads. He's out of his depth here. Nobody forces a football player to play football. I would have given my left testicle to be a player in Tiger Stadium.

Those dogs are forced to do those things.

typical progressive/leftist/liberal/whatever who hates free choice of humans and "knows better" than individuals pursuing their own self interest. his comments today on ESPN were so stupid that he's either gone off the deep end, or is just trying to pick a controversial topic to stay relevant

If college football wasn't so popular in the South these eggheads wouldn't be so stridently anti-college athletics. This is another, "Look how morally and intellectually superior to these Philistines we are" diatribes.

the same arguments against college football also apply to college hockey in my mind. he mentions hockey and boxing at points but doesn't focus on them because they don't share the same popularity.

Well, the finger he pointed was at the administration and students at the University of Pennsylvania because they were the people he was talking to and because he sees the public mission statement at U of Pennsylvania as being inconsistent with or opposed to their emphasis on football (or hockey)

He seems to concede that the situation is different for NFL players or perhaps more serious football schools which do not seem to consider academics their primary purpose.

I discussed something with a friend of mine after the OTL interview with the Arizona players that are suing the NCAA. He says they have no right to complain since they are getting an education. I mention that all pro leagues should follow the baseball model. A player could join a minor league team for an x amount of time or go to college for atleast 3 years. Seems like a good idea to me and it gives the best of both worlds.

No, but I'd be okay with eliminating (or wildly reducing) athletic scholarships.

Let athletes apprentice in professional academies under the guidance of professional coaches.

Wayne Rooney is as dumb as a box of rocks. He wasn't "forced" to go to college to be a successful soccer player.

The only answer to this is a resounding "no."

I haven't read Gladwell's stuff yet but the mere fact that most athletes wouldn't be admitted to their university unless they were good at a sport makes the idea of college athletics pretty silly.

I love college sports but if you've ever sat in class with a football or basketball player, with few exceptions, it's hard to ignore the ridiculousness of it all.

I was watching his interview on CNN today and he said "if Stanford were to eliminate football, it would be a dagger in the heart to the college football world and it would be a domino effect."

Could you imagine Stanford without a football team? A band (as shitty as it is)? Cheerleaders?

There's too much money floating around in the college football world for anything like this to happen. Not to mention, wtf is a school going to do with a vacant 70,000+ capacity stadium on the edge of campus?
