I fly into Chicago around 10AM Friday and I'll have a few hours to kill. What are some lunch spots I shouldn't miss? Thinking quintessential Chicago-type places, i.e. deep dish pizza, etc. Bear in mind I'm ballin' on a budget (sort of).

Do you like deep dish? Chicago is a great food town with the worst representative dish. Check out one of Rick Bayless or Paul Kahan joint. Much better.

I don't know that I've ever had a true Chicago deep dish. Kind of want to give it a whirl.

Well give it a whirl then but you are probably wasting a meal and money. Deep dish doesn't magically improve based on the zip code its served in

Having done nothing but ridden in a cab over that stretch, I don't recall seeing much of anything I'd be inclined to stop for. Perhaps someone who knows the town better can say otherwise.

Woe is me! I'll crawl back into my cave of ignorance.

Ever had a "po-boy" outside of New Orleans?

Didn't mean it that way, just that Chicago is one of the top dining cities in the country and there would be many more spots i would want to hit up long before deep dish. If you have to Lou Malnatis is probably the best.

And to echo above between Midway and Downtown is sort of fly over land.

That makes sense. I honestly don't know much about the city, only been twice. I guess anywhere downtown/soldier field/within a few miles will suffice.

Not exactly budget-esque lunch places. Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Depends on how you eat. You could pop into a few of those spots and have an app or two and a beer and spend same amount as you would somewhere less interesting.

I LOVE deep dish pizza. For a classic Chicago deep dish pizza, go to Uno's. For an authentic Chicago style roast beef "sangwich" go to Al's. You won't regret it.

Ub Dogs

Get an Italian Beef and a chicago dog while you're at it. Right By the bend in the river, might be good to walk it off around there.

Portillo's for more Hot dogs
more on North side right across the river

Athena Greek 212 South Halsted

Take a cab and tell the driver. Athena on S. Halsted.

Saganaki - Appetizer = Flaming Toast with goat cheese and lemon juice

Everything on menu is good.
