I channeled my inner-asian this weekend - Gafftops

While catching trout this weekend we kept hooking in to several 5lb+ gafftops, so after catching 3-4 of them we just decided to keep a few. We kept them separated from the trout to make sure the didn't get the ice chest slimy.
They actually turned out to be pretty good. They are not that hard to clean and have nice white meat. They do have a thick blood line, but even that wasn't strong tasting.

that's awesome. I have been saltwater fishing my whole life and never tried one. My dad always said "they are nasty...throw it back"... keep us posted how you cooked them...

About 40 years ago, I worked a few weeks on a charter boat out of Empire, ( Capt. Sweet don't remember his first name.)
We took some clients to Sandy Point rigs one day and were catching gafftops with the specks. using dead bait on Shad Rigs, two at a time. That trip was as much fun as I had working with him. Not a thing wrong with gafftops! They fry up really good.

We caught a pile of those things.
I just dont feel like screwing with the slime. I have eaten them and they are good.
No point in screwing with them when you can eat specs.

No way I could make myself put one of those slimy arse things in my ice chest.

Also wanted to say there is a prejudice against them because they make a mess in the box.... slimey.
Nothing wrong with the taste.

I've heard something about licking the under belly of a hardhead.

The bigger ones taste like piss. Too many other good fish out there for me to mess with those slimy bastards.

I don't even like putting those slimy things in the boat, much less the icechest. I have eaten them before and the were not bad.

We fried them fresh. The texture was nice and flaky and tasted milder than freshwater catfish.
The way we combated the slim was to put them in a 5 gallon bucket before they touched anything then ice them in the bucket. Once they were nice and cold, we threw them in the ice chest. They weren't slimy after they came out of the bucket.

I've always found most to agree they're pretty good to eat; just most swear they don't want it in their boat/cooler due to slime. OR, they just don't want to clean the things.

My woman is a Filipina, and when we fish together she wants to keep every damn thing. I got her trained to throw hardheads back, but everything else is fair game. I'm trying to teach her to use plastics to avoid the problem. Whoever told her that stingray was good to eat can kiss my arse, but they were pretty good.
I have always loved the sailfin cats.

No just fried them up. Didn't even use mustard or hotsauce
