Pelicans/76ers Trade would have gone down if Bennett or Oladipo were there too

Just days before the 2013 NBA Draft Nerlens Noel was still the presumptive No. 1 pick and Anthony Bennett was thought to be the guy falling down draft boards.

It was then that the brain trusts of Philadelphia and New Orleans came up with a trade that surprised a lot of people on draft night. It wasn’t all about Noel, explains Dei Lynam at CSNPhilly.com.

Three names supposedly would have supposedly gotten the deal done: Anthony Bennett, Victor Oladipo and Nerlens Noel. Bennett went first to the Cavaliers. Oladipo was selected second by Orlando, and fortunately for the Sixers, Noel was still on the board when the Pelicans picked at No. 6….

This gives insight into the workings of the draft and how deals get done on that night — it hardly happens in a five-minute window. Plans and contingency plans are mapped out in advance.

The trade was Noel and a future first-round pick to the Sixers for All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday.

That Philly was open to three players who play very different roles on the court shows what the Sixers wanted — talent. Guys that could be part of the future down the road, not so much next season. With Noel it may work out — if his knee is right he could be the best player out of this draft in three or four years. Which is when it matters because that is when they should have built up talent around him.

Philadelphia is not tanking but they have certainly put themselves in the “Woeful for Wiggins” discussion, and that’s not a bad thing. It’s better than bringing Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner, Thaddeus Young and the rest of the gang back to win 41 games.

But it’s a different direction than the Pelicans have gone — Holiday, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans and Anthony Davis are all young and talented. A lot of things still need to come together, but that is a nice collection of talent and a team on the rise.

Wow. So it almost didn't happen. With Bennett going first the odds of all 3 falling were low. Thank you Charlotte and Phoenix

there would have been 5-10 minutes of pure anger before they announced the trade if Bennett would've been our pick

I would have paid good money to see that meltdown from half the board and the justification from the other half.

I'm curious who we would have picked if Noel was gone instead of Len or Zeller. I would have to go with Burke though..

The way things fell you probably take McLemore and start looking to move Gordon.

The site would have crashed. I can't even imagine how the reaction.

And I have to think that if all three were gone, we probably would have gone Burke. Simply for the fact that we traded for a PG, so the front office must have thought that was the need.

Not sure about that. I think it's pretty obvious basketball ops was entering the draft with two thoughts:

1) We don't like anyone in this draft.
2) Benson says win now.

With those two things in mind I think they would have taken Noel and tried to ship him for something, somewhere.

Yea im not so sure about that either. Its not like we traded for a rookie, unproven PG. We traded for 1 of the top young PGs in the league with plenty of room to grow and playing on a good contract. Hes a better player than his contract $$.

I think we would of taken Mclemore too, or just kept Noel.. And considering weve been so active in FA this summer, try dishing Gordon if we drafted Mclemore.

And I get that the 76ers are in tank mode. But, they arent going to be that bad next year. Still have solid young players in Turner and Young with MCW. And Nerlens will play some. I dont think they get a top 5 pick. And i seriously doubt our pick is top 10. The 76ers might of shot themselves in the foot.

Going to be really bad, almost certainly top 5. Every team below the 76ers got better except Orlando and Phoenix. Young is the only above average player on the roster and he might still get traded.

I wondered how this trade went down, always figured it was a spur of the moment thing when Noel fell. Would have loved either Oladipo or Bennent as well.

McLemore would be a nice pick-up but I'd much rather have Jrue, Tyreke, and Gordon than McLemore + shite value for Gordon. Very happy with how things went down.

Really? I kinda wanted Bennett. Thought he was the best nba prospect in the draft. But I still would have loved the trade.
