Savage has celebrated a championship before. In 1998, he served as Mike Gillespie’s pitching coach for the Southern California team that ended the Gorilla Ball era with a 21-14 win against Louisiana State in the national title game.

They beat us in back to back games. It was double elimination. We beat them in our 1st game and then an SEC team in our 2nd game. They then beat us in our 3rd and 4th game.
