Is on the verge of committing to FSU. Tough loss- the LSU coaching staff wanted him pretty badly.

Is tight end really a "need" position for us right now?
Posted on 7/6/13 at 1:07 pm to ezrulz
Hmmmm. Think u may be off on that one.

Initially had interest but we settled on 1 TE and possibly moving Upchurch there

Yeah Im not sure how bad LSU really needed him anymore after Upchurch gained 20 pounds.
Im more than fine with him going somewhere else.
Washington and a hybrid Upchurch will be great additions.

According to who? Not sure who is advising this kid if this is true, but a good TE will do well in Cam's offense.

Really hasn't been much news on him, lately, but I could see letting him go....Just too many bigs on the list for other positions, with a top TE in Washington committed, and taking 2 last year (Smith was also highly rated). Also, the WR out of Texas is getting really big, and could be a tweener.

True. Best of luck to the kid, wherever he goes.

We can't take every Karr recruit. We don't need anymore TEs IMO.

After getting DeSean Smith last year and having Gordon, DIckson, and Stokes the TE position isnt a big need for us to fill. Were taking Jacory Washington because the dude has some huge upside and is going to be a hell of a player.
But were pretty much set at TE for the next few years. And considering how loaded this class could be and how #s are starting to turn into an issue, better to save that spot for another guy at a position we actually have a need for. And I think Anthony Jones is a heck of a football player, but there is no need to load up on TEs. Especially when its a position where its usually 1 guy at the position and rarely use 2 TEs. Thats why youre able to take a lot of DB, WRs, LB, etc. You have at least 2+ guys of that position on the field at the same time. Sure, sometimes you have 2 TEs on the field. But not nearly as much as you do with other positions.
And we have Upchurch committed. Ill be honest, I wasnt very high on the kid when he first committed. But, now Im really excited for him. Does he remind anyone else of Delanie Walker of the Titans, formerly of the 49ers? He reminds me so much of him. Walker played WR in college, but was in the 240 range. That allows him to play all over the field. Walker has lined up at WR, TE, RB, FB, and on the line at a tackle spot before. Not to mention is a special teams stud with his rare combination of size, speed, and elite athleticism. Im looking forward to Upchurch playing the same type of role. Mismatch nightmare. Too fast for LBs, too physical and big for CBs. Just gotta find the right way to implement him in the playbook. With an NFL offensive mind like Cameron, we should have no problem getting him on the field and at diff spots. I actually think thats maybe 1 of the reasons why we take Upchurch over a guy like Jones. Sure, Jones is your prototypical TE with the size and pass catching ability. But, the 1 thing about Upchurch that is exremely rare is hes UNIQUE. There are a lot of guys that are great football players, but there arent a lot of guys that are unique football players and bring so much versatility to the table. But, Upchurch is 1 of them.

Well I just woke up from a nap and checked the board, and saw this post, well fans unfortunately it maybe true because what Ive heard that LSU have cooled on AJ a little we call him Juice. They just haven't seen enough on him this past spring game or at practice but with that said he will attend LSU camp next week, I know coach Frank Wilson likes him but he has to stay hungry and continue to work hard for himself, so lets see what happens after camp if he does well he'll probably commit to Coach Les Miles then.
