Anyone fish this tourney? Was reading a thread on the hull truth about some "special" rule changes in the wahoo division to rule out a certian angler's boat that alwways catches big hoos.

anyway, here's a link to that thread, i figured the OB crew would have some thoughts on it.

I think my BIL caught the largest Blue Marlin of the tournament and won top angler award. He didn't make a big deal about it, I think he (team maybe) won a trout tournament the following weekend. I saw some pictures of Marlin on side of the boat, and the 6 lber he was holding while wading.

I'll reserve judgement until I hear from Capt. ST on the matter.

I did not understand how there could even be "another side" until I read this:

quote:

understand the point Bigeaux is trying to make... And it makes sense. The meat categories are meant as a side bet, to keep things fun and interesting. It has nothing to do with SF or CC...it's a billfish tourney, for billfish fishermen... With a side bet.

Put it this way... It's a tourney with a substantial side bet for smallest fish... And someone is showing up and trying to catch the smallest fish to win the side bet...it takes the fun out of it.

Oh, and I'm not saying I agree wit it. Just helped this fresh-life person understand what was going on a little bit.

the tourney director handled it like a little bitch, but i get why there's no one betting on wahoo; it's a side prize.

it's like having a bass tourney and having a side prize for goo. if someone knows how to catch big goo and they go after them specifically it sucks the fun out of that aspect of the tourney, because it is by nature supposed to be a bass tourney, and hey, if you catch a big goo while fishing, bring it to the dock and maybe you win a side prize. i don't see any "sportsmanlike" issues with the tournament changing their rules to make the tourney truly a billfish tourney with side-pots by forcing everyone to enter a billfish category.

that being said, the dude was 100% within the rules and the tourney handled it very unprofessionally. if they don't want people coming in and targeting the wahoo (or mahi, or tuna) specifically, then they need to change the rules, but not the damned day before the tourney. and certainly not targeting specific dudes who happen to be whipping everyone's arse every year.

I read the thread, seems this Tabor fella can catch a wahoo bigger than folks trying to catch billfish. He should have been allowed to put his check up, but the free market was taking care of the problem, they were just a tourney or two for the hoos and other species to not have enough money in the pot to get any interest, and it would be problem solved.

JJ is good people and they screwed him because they were scared of him.

Just because someone is excellent at a certain species doesn't mean it should be disallowed due to limited participation. Calcuttas are based on how many pay into it.

Fact is, the dude knows how to catch fish and they were scared of him raking up

Big boat guys pissed us go fast pussy boats with downriggers are kicking their asses king fishing for wahoo. Man talk about grabbing their football and taking it home. They have to keep getting away from competition by going longer because they cant catch next to anybody with skills. Money or Daddy's money doesn't buy fishing skills. Glad they are admitting they can only win by legislating it!

JJ is fishing with Neal Foster who finishes in the top in points in Ska pro tour annually. Had a sponsor call and ask what it would take to go out and kill a bill, just to shut those rich vaginas up.

This is an interesting issue for all of the large events on the gulf. Big boats aren't entering the wahoo calcutta because they know they will not win it...same with swords. The modern day CC that is 39' long and can run 70 mph has caused a change of sorts.

One guy in that thread suggested a CC only tourney out of Venice. I have heard other mention the same. I think this would be an opportunity for someone to set up a tourney and make some cash.

The CC is only growing more versatile, fast and electronically equipped. IMO it is only a matter of time before they are as competitive with billfish as the big boats too.

I don't know JJ, but it appears he is quite good at his craft. I saw on Hulltruth his 39 Contender is for sale. Hope he didn't get frsutrated and make a rash decision.

JJ is a grouper guy, the guy Neal he has on boat with him is putting him on the hoo. They've been withholding their money from wahoo, when they switch to mahi or tuna then what? Hey, they're embarrassed when they think they are in first with a 20lb snake and JJ and crew drops a 90lber on dock and make them rich pricks look like a douche for killing a baby. If a CC guy comes in with a 95" bill they'd raise holy hell for them killing it.

He made millionaires look like pussies.... Rule changes at the last minute

But I can see the free market thing...

I personally wouldn't bet against him
