Copeland was good this year, so id like the deal as long as the contract isn't over the top.

We still wouldn't have anybody that could guard a SF though...

We will see. As I said his Man-to-man was ok, but his help D was pretty damn poor. We won't know if its a product of the system or if he can get better at it. Help defense is more a thing that can be taught than man to man is, so that is encouraging.

He really wasn't asked to be a rebounding guy...he was asked to score.

Makes sense, but with all hands having to crash the boards, this would limit our transition offense, which was a weak area for us last year.

Plus it's not like the Knicks as a whole played a lot of good defense. Maybe it was a system/mindset thing as you said.

I did a bit more digging at 82games.com and while he split time at SF/PF about 50/50, he was way more productive at PF. 21 PER vs 11 PER as a SF, so he appears to be a much better stretch 4 than SF.

Ryan Anderson also plays stretch 4, is a questionable long term fit next to Davis, is worth more minutes than he'll get if he and Davis can't fit well long term, and is the teams most valuable trade chip. Just sayin...

I saw the same numbers, but it is hard to say because the Knicks play such a different system for us.

I don't think this has any impact on Ryno in the short term. I think they just want to add another versatile player with a good skillset on a good contract.

Pack a bag, Ryno?

Didn't be play some minutes at Center when Chandler was hurt? The games I watched, they always used him as an emergency guy after all the injuries. I was actually pretty shocked he played as much as he did (I hate watching the Knicks)..

Pack a bag Lance Thomas? This team definitely needs to acquire more talent. Copeland could be the Lopez2 in the Anderson2 + Lopez2 offseason plan.

I like Ryno so much as a player, person, and personality, so this would suck, but you gotta do what's best for the team. We all know they didn't play much with each other last season. If it's indeed b/c of fit, then Copeland would be a much cheaper stretch four and Ryno should bring in a nice return in a trade for sure.

But I'll always be a Ryno fan wherever he plays.

Basically a bench sharp shooter. Plays no defense. Not sure why we would invest more than $3 million in this guy.

That's kind of my feeling, as well.

Looking at Knicks forums, they want to keep him and are crying about the new CBA not allowing them to keep him and being "unfair".

Oh sweet irony.

Yeah. I remember some of the old curmudgeons over at HR went nuts when the new CBA did "nothing" to change the big market vs. small market situation. The new CBA seems to be favoring the smart instead of protecting the stupid, which has to be good for the league and small markets.

Just in: #Knicks have made a qualifying offer to Copeland for 1 year at $988,872. Cope has until July 23 to accept. Other teams interested.

You have to think he'll reject that.

Ryan Anderson had problems when teams put their SF on him because Aminu can't score. The defense would go to hell but you'd have great spacing with Copeland and Anderson on the floor together. There were spurts seemingly every game where it was impossible to manufacture points. If you hit that wall next season you'd have more options to get the offense going.

Found this gem on a Knicks board

quote:

Not that big a deal if he walks -- and I really like him, don't get me wrong. I just feel there's much better players out there that we can get for that role (Melo's backup/a fully capable, offensive-minded forward with skill-size) for a lot cheaper (assuming Cope scores a deal in the 3-4 mil a year range). Shawne Williams returning is one possibility. Craig Brackins would be an even better one. Instant upgrade over Copeland in my book and we could probably grab that guy for the minimum. They're slightly different players but Brackins would essentially be like adding a young Al Harrington -- I think he's that good/versatile offensively. As good an offensive player as Copeland is, and he's surprisingly solid, Brackins is better and I don't even think it's close. Better defender/rebounder than Cope as well. I've been saying it -- look for deals, look for value. They're out there. Leave no stone unturned!
