re: Pelicans are planning to make an offer to Chris Copeland

I'm big into fantasy basketball so I kept an eye on Copeland this past season to see if his minutes would increase. He's a solid player and would be a great get for the Pels.

He was solid when he started. In 13 games

16 PPG
4 RPG
2 3PG @ 43%

He lit some teams up over the course of the year. I like it

I wouldn't mind this move, but only if Monty can get him out of the Knick's "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality.

The absence of that attribute lost us several games last year. Remember those very low scoring 3rd quarters? This was one of the only reasons I didn't bash Roberts, he wasn't scared to shoot like the rest of the team.

Come on, Jester... Obviously you realize there is a difference in drafting someone at 6, and signing a role player.

Yes, I do. I also know the difference between 2 sf/pf tweeners and 3 sf/pf tweeners.

Judging by your comment, I wouldn't know

Who are the 3 you are referring to?

We should start a thread ranking the players we'd never consider.

I had a list earlier this offseason of some 3s we should consider.

One of the lesser-known guys I think we should kick the tires on would be Alan Anderson of Toronto.

LINK

He drew more fouls than Aminu, shot 86% from the line, has a better passer rating / is a better ball-handler, and is a much better shooter.

He's not a long-term starter by any means, but he is a guy we can put out there to stretch the floor a bit since he can actually hit a jump shot, unlike Aminu.

SF by committee or buh-bye Aminu?

Probably by committee, but Demps could potentially see a cheap starter. In the 20 games he got 19 or more minutes he averaged 16 points on 12 shots while shooting 49% from the field, 47% from 3 and 78% from the line. He looks like he could be an efficient starter. One question I do have is how much of those numbers were compiled playing SF vs PF. 82 games says he split time about 50/50. If he's more efficient as a stretch 4, that position's already filled. I assume Demps sees him as a SF or wouldn't be interested.

I would think so. He performed pretty well when filling in for Carmelo when he was out for a few games.

two of those are not on our team. and one of those will definitely not be on the team if the other is.

That was the point I was making when I asked:

But what about Anthony Bennett?

I'm thinking maybe he didn't understand my sarcasm. I was just kind of ribbing a certain poster who is in love with Bennett.

Haha, looks like it... My bad, I misunderstood the point you were trying to make, and I haven't really considered Anderson a 3/4 tweener, but more of a stretch 4. I'll refrain from posting until after lunch time from now on.

re: Pelicans are planning to make an offer to Chris Copeland
I see this as a very SAS type of move:

A versatile player that played overseas or took time to develop, can play more than one position, is a cheap role player that can start or come off the bench, that can hit the 3 to open up the middle for a star PF, and that can work in multiple lineups, next to various players for different looks.

Imagine the shooting out there if we got McLemore.

You could run total small ball with Vasquez, Gordon, McLemore, Copeland, Anderson (obviously in only small doses when Davis is out)...you could go bigger with Gordon, McLemore, Copeland, Davis, Lopez, etc etc etc.

Or if you have Burke there are a lot of possibilities as well.

Like I said...very Spurs-ish move.

You think I'm in love with Bennett? No, definitely not.

I love to play devil's advocate for certain players. I think he's an elite offensive player but I don't think he fits here, especially not at the #6 pick.

The more I read about him, the more I like the move.

quote:

He can shoot the three, but he doesnt do anything else. Nothing wrong with that, but I doubt they are thinking of doubling his mpg and turning him into a starter.

...This actually fits perfectly for us drafting Burke. Pick and Roll with Davis/Ryno and have CC on the outside shooting threes.

How is his defense? He's tall and long for a 3, but is he athletic enough to guard 3s?

Pretty bad. His self-assessment is that he was ok in man-to-man but was terrible in help defense, which by all accounts seems to be the case.

But he is a hard worker:

quote:

"I'll be working out of Richmond, Virginia, mostly. I went to high school out there and I have some trainers there. Also, some NBA guys like Ben Wallace and Ed Davis. I'll be a much better player next year; that's my goal. My focus is defense, absolutely."

I was about to ask the same thing. If he can't guard 3's, then no way we being him in as a potential starter. Could maybe get by as a SF with the 2nd unit guarding other teams bench SF's, but I would like to see what Miller can give us as a bench SF guy getting 10-15 mins per game this year.

Also his per 36 rebounding numbers (5 per 36) aren't good for someone that played 50/50 SF and PF. Him on the court with Lopez seems like would kill us on the boards.

At The Hive had an end of season write up on Lopez and despite his poor individual rebounding numbers the team rebounded better and at a pretty good rate with him in the game. Basically Vasquez and Aminu benefited from Lopez boxing out well but not being athletic enough to box out and get the rebound. He won't be as good as Aminu, but I'd expect his rebounding to benefit as well.
