I was in Oklahoma for 1989 but recall a number of issues that led to collapse after I think we were in pre-season top 5? The stuff below may all be bs, and in the end maybe we just were never able to recover from 0-2 start with losses to A&M and FSU. Anyway, what do we know fact/rumor about:

Was there an issue with our playbook being stolen in game 1 loss to A&M? Or did we just lose to better team?

Wasnt there a community activist guy (who later went to jail for child molestation) who stirred up some issues about our recruiting? Was Harvey Williams a part of this turmoil?

I know I have heard 100 times there was a major fist fight on flight home from uk loss

I happen to like Pete Jenkins but also had heard he was in constant turmoil with Archer.

Did you join just to ask questions about 1989? I was at LSU and don't remember anything too out of the ordinary. Although, fighting was much more common, and even semi-acceptable. I probably wouldn't even remember it.

As far as the other stuff...Doubt it. Harvey Williams was definitely a cocky son of a gun but fun to be around, kept us in the major news and most of us loved him.

Yeah, this didn't help. Starting off the season with two good teams was a dumbass move. A&M wasn't any better than us, but had some big plays and some help from the refs to beat us. They wound up with a mediocre year also.

FSU started off 0-2 and was not going to lose to us. If CFB had a playoff in 89, they would have won the MNC. They rolled after losing to S Miss and Clemson. We were never really in that game at all.

Our defense just really sucked that year. It was like 2008. In 1990, we were actually a much better team but lost a lot of close games.

As far as the defense, I remember them switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 in the middle of the season. Back then, I was living in Bama and the only way to get news was a week old Tiger Rag.

Wasn't there a community activist guy (who later went to jail for child molestation) who stirred up some issues about our recruiting? The answer was a BIG FAT "YES"!!!!The guy was a piece of S#$%. Was a very POOR representative for the NAACP. Claimed LSU was racist. Broke LSU's back in recruiting back then.

Mike Archer lost control of that Team, Knowing what I know of Pete Jenkins I can understand why they would not get along.

"Mike Archers recruiting philosophy was akin to driving around New Orleans in a 16 passenger van and loading up with thugs" ~talk show host in BR

The rumor - if I recall - going around then was that the pilot would not take off until the team settled down. A scuffle broke out, and people wouldn't get in their seats and shut up.

The story fed nicely into the argument made by those wanting Archer gone. This was before internet boards, when a story or rumor told by people who seemed "connected" could go unchecked and keep making the rounds.

Thread about this type of stuff from the 85 season a while back. It involved Christmas Day walk throughs in the liberty bowl parking lot...players eating at 7-11 for dinner on the bowl trip, etc. The 80s seemed like a great time!

As I recall, Eames & Daddy Dale were close, to the extent he got ringside seats at the basketball games.

This stuff always fascinates me and while it seems we as fans often look for any "outside" reason to explain when we lose, it is almost always that we lost becuase the other team was better. Still a 4-7 season with Hodson (a proven winner like few others at QB ever at LSU), H Williams, Moss and plenty of other talent there had to be much more to why we lost to 7 teams including Kentucky. I do think chemistry is often underrated and this team did not have it, for whatever reason. They ahad some bad breaks (putting time back on the clok to let UF kick winning FG), but teams with talent and chemistry overcome bad breaks.

Then count me in the minority.

I hated that son of a bitch. Against better competition in '89 he was always pulling up lame talking about his hip pointer. Funny how lesser teams never managed to make his hip point. Way overrated, and coming right after Dalton Hilliard just showed up what a POS he was.

And that choking bullshite didn't help. The guy was a major prick and I always wished he had gone to A&M in the first place. That's the first time I ever saw a recruit jerk a school around on signing day. I don't like it now, and I didn't like it then.

Can you tell I didn't like Harvey?

Haha, Darrell Williams...
I remember he was usually getting into more confrontations than Harvey and he used to wear that white coonskin cap out to The Tiger!
Seems like he was dating or least hanging out a lot with our best gymnast at the time, I forget her name.

I was on that team......I was on that plane.......

A lot of poor game planning and frustration. The fist fight was blown waaaayyyy out of proportion. But, hey, sounds good to assume.

I happened to like Darrel and had no love loss for long neck. I will say this, Harvey could throw hands damn well.....beat D's arse and I'd rather not lock horns with D.

...I've been a season ticket holder since the early 1980's. Every time LSU struggled, like clockwork there was a rumor that there were racial issues on the team.

When LSU won, everything was lovely.

The racial rumors were usually started by the extremes with the agendas.
