Why is Serena Williams getting a free pass from the media for her comments

on the Ohio rape case?

The facts of the case:

1. Two high school athletes, one black, one white (ages 16 & 17) rape a 16 year old white girl over a period of 6 hours at various locations.

2. They also took videos/pics of the girl naked and posted them online and in some social media.

3. The girl was intoixicated throughout most of the ordeal, and has little memory of what happened.

4. Williams weighed in on the subject three days ago to say that the girl should never have been in that situation in the first place and that she was not sure the boys got fair treatment.

5. They boys got, repectively, two years in a juvenile facility and one year in the same facility. This was the minimum allowable sentence.

My thoughts:

1. The perps should have gotten MUCH more jail time than they got.

2. While it's true that they girl acted fooishly by getting drunk at a party, in no way, shape or form does that justify what happened to her. Anybody have any guesses on how many high school girls get drunk at parties each weekend night in America?

3. The media should be ripping Serena Williams a new one over her comments, but she seems to be getting a free pass. Only fellow tennis player Maria Sharapova has called her out for her comments.

Thoughts?

quote:

TENNIS STAR Serena Williams put her size-10 foot in her mouth by blaming the 16-year-old victim of the notorious Steubenville, Ohio, rape case for putting “herself in that position.”

Williams made the foul claim, according to an upcoming Rolling Stone magazine profile, when she saw a TV report about the two Ohio football players being tossed in jail for the brutal sexual assault.

“Do you think it was fair, what they got?” Williams asked the Rolling Stone interviewer, shaking her head. “They did something stupid, but I don’t know.”

Then Williams dug herself in further, according to excerpts obtained by Deadspin

“I’m not blaming the girl,” she said, “but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember?”

Williams, 31 and currently the top-ranked female tennis player in the world, went on to say that what happened to the girl “could have been much worse.”

“She’s lucky,” Williams said. “Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

of course she is...star athlete and all of that.

Her comments were shameful and part of the new wave of "slut" shaming.

Paula Deen might have a different take on star treatment.

This is definitely a good indicator of the hypocrisy in our country. I don't wholly disagree with what she said, but I believe her comments are worse than something Paula Deen said 20 years ago.

Wow, I was fairly neutral towards her before outside of a vague rooting for America in tennis but...wow.

What a judgemental bitch.

I hope she blows an ACL.

Who the frick is she again to chime in on this and insinuate that a girl is a slut and therefore deserved being raped, and why is she weighing in on this particular issue?

Well, being a black dude herself, of course she's going to take that position.

These are all from your links.

Now, how is she getting a free pass?

Compare and contrast with Dean.

That's ripping a new one, and it was over 20 year old conduct.

Are sponsors backing away from SW?

After tennis, Serena should coach the Duke Lacrosse team.

You see those quotes from the OP article as some kind of critique of Williams? IMO it's pretty bland descriptive language. Not one of the three statements is a criticism of Williams.

Let me guess, now you are going to argue the defense of the guys isn't racially motivated.

Does it matter if you deem one worse than the other? They were both messed up things to say.

You're right; what Williams said was worse. Much worse. Deen admitted to using the N word in the past. That's it. I'm not defending her. She's an idiot and I have no problem with what the Food Network did in response. But Williams should be treated with even more contempt IMO. Yet I don't see the outrage.

Dean is whiter and older.
They're about the same weight.
IQ's are about the same.

They are all basically saying that she said something stupid. Which is what happened.

How is getting pissy over this any different than Jesse or Al getting pissy over the nonsense that they like to stir up?

Unless I missed something, Serena didn't say anything that could be construed as racially motivated, unless you are really fricking reaching.
