Learning (and retaining) how to tie proper knots

My dad taught me at a young age how to tie knots.. I have since then forgotten most of them. Which knots should I know??

Bowline is the most useful knot that I use other than cleat knots. Hitches probably next. And square knots.

And yeah, there's an app for that.

Speaking of cleat knots... Am I the only one that notices how many people don't understand how to do that? When I'm putting my boat up I don't even bother worrying about it anymore because I've just gotten used to having to go behind everyone other than just a handful of people and retie the cleats. It's like locking it down correctly is either something people don't know about or just can't figure out how to do right or something.

I agree on the cleats. with few exceptions I have to redo all of them if we dock somewhere.

The super Munter looks really handy. I think I will have to add this one to my normal use.

I also us a combo of knots that I have always heard called a Chinese come a long. I don't know if there is a more proper name.

Animated knots is a very good website. Tons of knots, step by step tutorials.

Yep there are other ways you can do it, but that one right there works every time, uses the least line, and does not slip. And it's very simple. But you have to get that lock down on the last loop so the rope goes under itself and lines up with the crossed rope parallel. It's just a matter of flipping the rope over but I've seen people sit there and try to figure out how to do that like it's some kind of magical piece of seamanship beyond the ken of mere mortals more times than I can count. And that's just the ones that know they're supposed to do it. Most don't.
