Pure genius by Google.
Trick the masses in to collecting walking GPS data for them by turning it in to a game.

I don't think I used my activation code so I can forward you the email. Hopefully it is still valid. I got the email back on Dec 18, 2012.
What's your email?
eta: I'm reading the email now and it was for the beta test so it probably will not work

Think of it like this:
Throughout the world are "hotspots" you get recruited into a faction (currently there are 2, one group that resist the change and the other than proselytizes for it) and it is your job to find "portals" throughout the world and "hack" them to bring said portals under the control of your faction.
You hack portals to receive items, you use the items to protect said portals.. so let's say I'm with the resistance (I currently am) and I come across a portal that's owned by the Enlightened, I can "hack" the portal to receive items and some exp points, I can also attack said portal to try and take down it's defenses.
If I come across a portal that is unaffiliated I hack the portal then drop "defense bots" around the portal and the portal comes under my control and I get a butt load of exp points for it.
If I come across someone elses portal and they are with the resistance - I can upgrade their portal and strengthen their defenses, in case someone from the enlightened has attacked it.
There is also a part of the game where you link portals together and create a "barrier" .. basically a barrier counts as HUGE points for your team, and you can't do anything inside of a barrier either.

I tried it a few months ago. There is actually a well organized group of Resistance players here in BR willing and eager to help new players. I met up with a few of them and they're all really nice.
At the time the Enlightened players were less organized and helpful.
It's kind of fun but if the portals in your area are at a much higher level than you (which was the case for me) you can't really do much of anything at the start. See, you level up like in an RPG and the big experience bonuses come from taking down enemy portals.
If you are level 1 or 2 and every enemy portal around you is level 7 or 8, you end up doing no damage to the portal and wasting all of your XM, which is the energy you need to attack stuff. So, at the beginning it can be a frustrating exercise in running around town to make no headway.
Essentially you have to have a higher level player tag along with you to weaken portals so you can take them down. If you do this, you can gain 3 - 5 levels in a single night of playing, depending on what the lay of the land is.
