For a Completion Specialist in the Oilfield is?

Anyone know what kind of work it is? Labor intensive? What percentage is labor intensive...or is it more mentally taxing?

My guess is he's talking about a completions specialist who works on rigs for an oilfield service company.

I you're talking about a completions field hand that would go offshore, it's not going to be a salary position. You're going to spend some time offshore and probably not have a set schedule. From what I've seen, it's not extremely labor intensive, although you do have to get out there and handle some equipment. The difficult part of the job is not knowing your schedule, being offshore for possibly 30 days, and having to be available 24 hours a day when you're out there. Also, it can be a little mentally taxing, because you're responsible for your companies equipment. One screw up could cost millions.

Money is good though. I know different companies have different pay structures, but it sounds like experienced hands who have a good reputation and are requested by the larger companies (Shell, Chevron, etc.) can make 200k+ a year. It's not a lifestyle that I would want though. And that's by no means guaranteed money.

Thanks for the responses...it's not for me...for a buddy, I'll have to get more information...but I was just looking for a ball park idea.

I think it's probably better if he went to college first..LOL

Depends, I went to Southeastern for a year then couldn't afford it anymore. Now im working in the Oil field in Port Fourchon making 60k a year. I think that if you go to school, school wont prepare you as well for hands on experience so to say in the Oilfield I mean. so I would say go to college if not majoring in oilfield related practices. (other than maybe safety, another story)

College degree and then working in the field will get you far. Just going straight into the field, you'll probably be there for the rest of your career. Its a life some people don't mind and that's great for them, but I couldn't do it. I have friends who have business degrees doing it for the experience to get office jobs.
