I think it really boils down to the depth of the fences. That was the big difference between the two teams last night. If the game was played in a normal stadium, the score is 6-2 LSU.

The people saying things like this, clearly haven't followed LSU baseball at all until last night.

I think there is a good possibility it would be Rodon or Plutko.

I want NC State on Thursday...no way Rodon throws there. We won't lose to UCLA again.

Best case scenario.

Not sure what either of those have to do with him as a fielder... Bregman has been a solid shortstop and occasionally has highlight reel plays, but he's definitely made a few costly errors that make you scratch your head. He'sa freshman. He'll get better on D, not that he's a poor fielder by any means. He's just booted a few balls at times when we've really needed him to step up.

true, but when we're in the bottom of the 8th and that damage had already been done, and we have the tying run on and no outs, you gotta bunt with a sinker-ball pitcher on the mound. Risk of double play is high. We showed bunt twice but when the count went 2-0 im guessing he got the green light to swing. That double play killed us.

This! Raph tried to pull a low outside pitch rather than taking ball three. He is the slowest runner in the lineup. Rule of thumb, you play to win on road and play to tie when home team. PM made a high risk gamble that cost LSU the game.

Maybe if you'd have been watching him all year long you'd see how dumb that comment was. He's made amazing plays all year long.

So you avoided the hell out of that one huh! He won all of those awards b/c of his bat obviously. I think he is an OK fielder but his is only a freshman. He has caused us to not turn alot of double plays and made some huge errors this yr. There is no denying that but I blame the loss on the hitting not the errors. Had we just been able to put up 3 measely runs nobody would give a shite about the errors!

Swinging at pitches you should lay off of and swinging for the fences is NOT the same thing

They knew what we would do, put their outfielders in the right spots, and we did nothing. They knew we would try to hit it over their heads or in the gap, put their guys 20 feet from the warning track, and we NEVER tried to drop anything in front of them. Our style was doomed in that ballpark unless they pulled a Louisville and put their CF 50 feet behind second base.

Why don't you explain what would have worked instead of smugly calling people stupid?

UCLA's style of play translates to any ballpark, anytime. The conditions, demensions of the field, etc don't really matter. Not so with LSU. In 95% of college ballparks that's a 5-2, 6-2 game last night. Ibarra crused two that should have been HR's and Steveson hit another. It's just difficult to change the formula that has been so successful all year long right at the end of the season.

It's the difference between two equally good D's including pitching and one team believing in, and being consistently proficient, at small ball vs one that has a more traditional offense that struggled to bunt well all season. UCLA can scratch some runs in most any game by executing and pressuring the opponent's D, whereas LSU has no other option when the bats are delivering loud outs all night long. A few little things here and there and LSU wins. I still believe UCLA will be a very difficult opponent for any team in that park if UCLA's pitching holds up. Just sucked LSU drew them first.

What you said was fricking stupid. We weren't just "trying to hit it over their heads and in the gaps"? What analysis leads you to believe that we were just trying to hit homeruns? The fact that we hit a lot of popups? That may have had more to do with their 11th round draft pick of a pitcher throwing high strikes - something that he has done ALL season long. Anyone who follows college baseball knew that was exactly what he was going to do. LSU practiced for it. They set up a pitching machine to throw chest high fastballs before the game.

would have worked instead

Nothing. We lost. We could have not made those 2 errors, but this is baseball and that is going to happen. Plutko threw a good game and kept us off balance and we weren't able to get our hands on top of his high fastballs.

You spewing off about how they were just "swinging for fences and didn't do anything different" shows that you are stupid and don't watch baseball until the postseason.

No way. The coaches were supposed to tell the players to hit the ball in front of the outfielders. Simple as that, nothing to it.

No doubt we swung at lots of balls high in the zone and above the zone.

Many times hitters see those as mistakes or gifts and punish them.
Not just with home runs, but all over the field.

That didn't happen last night.
Might have had something to do with how good their pitcher was, just maybe.

Every time we face an ace pitcher and he keeps us low scoring and with few hits, people have to bring in the old "stop swinging for the fence.... why don't we try to hit singles?"
crap.

I'm sure none of our coaches or hitters thought of hitting singles last night.

All they had to do was tell them to stop swinging at it, right?

I mean it isn't like hitters have chased pitches out of their hitting zone since the beginning of time or anything.

CPM should have yelled at Katz for hitting that homerun.

He made all of our other hitters think they were going to hit two homers each.
