So after seeing all of the recent turtle pics and cleaning tips on the OB, I was inspired and hoping to catch one so I could give it a try. Well....as luck would have it...we caught a nice softshell (about 5# of meat yielded from the catch) on Sunday on a trotline with regular catfish dough bait. Here's some pics of the entire process:

I know I'll get some smart arse hoist comments but I don't care. I hoisted so you could get a reference on the size of the turtle (I'm 6'2" 250#)

Did a fairly good job of cleaning the inside without damaging the shell. But it isn't easy...

Chef John Folse recipes: Turtle Sauce Piquante on left and Papoo's Turtle Soup on right. Both were awesome!

Thanks again OB! The cleaning pictures were perfect help for a rookie.

I have never seen a softshell that big. What are you doing with the shell?

The shell is sitting in a large antpile getting "cleaned" since Sunday - the flies were also on it within 2 minutes. Once it looks clean, stops smelling and dries out, I'm gonna hit it with a few coats of lacquer. I've seen several Internet ideas on how best to clean and presevere them.

Anyone else have any ideas?

What's the fascination the OB has with turtles? Are they really that good for eatin'?

I've lived in South LA for 34 of my 36 years on this planet and have never had the inkling to try it. Just doesn't appeal to me for some reason.

Yes they are.

I've converted many folks to turtle eaters. They still think it's gross to clean them, but when I supply the turtle and cook, they line up to fill their bellies.

If you tell some uppity person it's turtle they'll be like

But don't tell them what it is and they'll be like

Eating turtle meat is better than sex.

The only thing that I have to add is this:

You're probably fine leaving the softshell in the ant pile. If this were a snapper or alligator snapper, I wouldn't leave it in an ant pile. Sometimes, the ants will chew through the tendons that hold the plates on the shell. The plates fall off and you're left with a white shell (not very appealing). I usually just set them on top of my metal roof on my shed and let the sun do work. After a few days, everything is dried and you can simply scrape the inside and the dried meat that's left comes out pretty easy.

ETA: We used to use formaldehyde to dry it out quick, but the gubment doesn't like us having nice things anymore.

Coulda racked up today (or anyday really) at the LSU lakes. Saw 2 softshells about the size of yours, a snapper, and a 5ft gator while riding my bike. First gator I've seen in there in a few years.
